Decent story, Meh narration

I like historical mysteries, and the plot and characters were good. The narrator's brogue was obviously fake, and I couldn't get used to it. I realize that accents are hard, especially in different people's voices, but this was just too annoyingly bad. Her old man voices were even worse, sounding like they had swallowed gravel and were at death's door. Her laugh sounded like someone laughing at a bad joke, heh-heh. I probably won't continue the series since I get so distracted by the narration.

Only enough plot for a short story

This would have made a better short story. I got bored with hearing every thought that flitted through the vacuum between Flora's ears. Like other reviewers I had to slow down the playback to be able to stand her high-pitched voice.

I had enjoyed the previous books, including the silliness, but this was ditsy overload. I hope the next one is better!

Coffee, Coffee, coffee

This book was more an ode to coffee than a mystery. Coffee worshipers may enjoy hearing endless raptures about the proper way to buy, store, brew, and drink coffee, but I like a mystery to be primarily a mystery. I also don't like stories that "cheat" on the solution. I won't spoil it by being more specific for those who chose to listen. Narrator was great!

I enjoyed the story, but struggled with the narration. His male voices were very similar toveach other with a lazy "public school" drawl that were hard to hear.

The plot was engaging without trite cliches. Characters were genuine and interesting. The romance seemed natural and thankfully not ridiculously thwarted forever! Otillia has a brain and observational skills which are exceptional without seeming supernatural or punctuated by lapses of stupidity like some protagonists! The narrator was excellent as well. I can't wait to get the next book!

I felt like this was a short story with a lot of padding, not what I expect from this author. While I enjoy the recipes, describing every step in the narrative is redundant. Two long-winded descriptions of cat chases was too much. The murder didn't occur until three-fourths of the way through the book!

The slips of modern language made it hard to get immersed in the story set in Regency England.

Watch out for the recipe

Overall
4 out of 5 stars

I've enjoyed all the Hannah books I've read/listened to. The narrator does a good job with the voices. I wish they had added a note that the last recipe (for fudge cupcakes) had an error. It is corrected during the story in the next book, but that was too late for me. I had cupcake batter ALL over my oven. The recipe called for baking SODA instead of baking POWDER. Beware all recipe testers!

Extraordinary

Amelia Peabody Emerson is an amazing character. Her stubbornness, curiosity, and sensitivity make her very appealing. The mystery, of course, is primary, but the family dynamics, suspense, and frequent comedy make every book in this series a joy. The Egyptology and history are a plus. Barbara Rosenblatt is the best at reading these books. Her characterization and voices, even for the male characters, is perfect. These are books to listen to again and again.
