About this listen

When a murder is committed, a lady's companion finds herself in the role of amateur sleuth...

1789, London: When Emily Fanshawe, Marchioness of Polbrook, is found strangled in her bedchamber, suspicion immediately falls on those residing in the grand house in Hanover Square.

Emily's husband - Randal Fanshawe, Lord Polbrook - fled in the night and is chief suspect - much to the dismay of his family.

Ottilia Draycott is brought in as the new lady's companion to Sybilla, Dowager Marchioness, and soon finds herself assisting younger son Lord Francis Fanshawe in his investigations.

Can Ottilia help clear the family name? Does the killer still reside in the house?

Or could there be more to the mystery than meets the eye?

Glad it was free. I would never of wanted to pay for that.

I did not enjoy this at all. The narrator was terrible. Her voice slurred so bad at times I had to adjust speed to understand her.

Pleasant story, a little long winded, and wordy, but listening to the accent while hearing the book was excellent.

A very nice , somewhat unpredictable and long winded tale, but the reader was superb. Characters well suited.

Good combo mystery and romance

Excellent female main character - intelligent problem solver who is two steps ahead of everyone else and is respected by the other characters including the potential love interest. It was refreshing not to have the ubiquitous rehashing of the main characters’ problems via their internal dialogue. The communication between characters was realistic without hidden agendas as well as being straight forward. The story/mystery wouldn’t have worked i.e. held my interest, without the use of the character’s explanatory dialogues that kept the storyline moving without the use of superficial and/or contrived scenes and solutions. I would recommend the Gilded Shroud to readers/listeners who enjoy light historical mysteries that are character driven. If readers/listeners are looking for steamy scenes they will be disappointed; there are none. There is romantic tension but no overt sexual tension or descriptive scenes. The narration was good with the appropriate emotion conveyed and different character’s voices easily recognized.

Delightful new (to me) series

I'm ashamed that I was hesitant to buy this first book in this series because I let myself be swayed by the rabid caterwallings of the faux literati. I swear there are some really petty souls in this world that managed to find something to niggle about in this book.
Acceptably cryptic. Pleasantly paced romantic development. Engaging dialog. A heroine that is appreciated for her skills and valued instead of having to ENDLESSLY fight against being dismissed (get over it already, we get it, some men are dumb).
Loved this first selection and will probably wind up working my way through the entire series.
Take that, haters.
