Story
This is a tale of murder. Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it? Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex-movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

Great story! I loved the narration too. The story keeps you guessing. The author does a wonderful job building the characters.

Story
Born under different stars—Mungo a Protestant and James a Catholic—they should be sworn enemies if they’re to be seen as men at all. Their environment is a hyper-masculine and sectarian one, for gangs of young men and the violence they might dole out dominate the Glaswegian estate where they live. And yet against all odds Mungo and James become best friends as they find a sanctuary in the pigeon dovecote that James has built for his prize racing birds.

Beautiful but heartbreaking story with memorable characters.

I did not like the abrupt ending. Too many loose ends. I have a big pet peeve about being left hanging in stories. Doesn’t have to end with “they lived happily ever after”. It just needs to have an ending that doesn’t just fall off a cliff.

Story
Shuggie’s mother Agnes walks a wayward path: She is Shuggie’s guiding light but a burden for him and his siblings. She dreams of a house with its own front door while she flicks through the pages of the Freemans catalogue, ordering a little happiness on credit, anything to brighten up her grey life. Married to a philandering taxi-driver husband, Agnes keeps her pride by looking good - her beehive, make-up, and pearly-white false teeth offer a glamourous image of a Glaswegian Elizabeth Taylor.

There’s far too much real pain and sadness in the world to spend any time listening to this tale of woe

Realistic and heartbreaking. I know that Shuggie story is far from unique. You could feel everything with him.

Story
Northern California, during the violent end of the 1960s. At the start of summer, a lonely and thoughtful teenager, Evie Boyd, sees a group of girls in the park and is immediately caught by their freedom, their careless dress, their dangerous aura of abandon. Soon Evie is in thrall to Suzanne, a mesmerizing older girl, and is drawn into the circle of a soon-to-be infamous cult and the man who is its charismatic leader.

Outstanding

The story was so well written. I couldn’t put it down. As a female growing up in the 70’s and 80’s I identified with so many of Evie’s feelings and emotions and some of her experiences. As I think most women my age will. The author gave a very honest account of the many ways that girls and women have been used and exploited and how we managed with limited resources in the years before the Me Too Movement.

Story
Summer is coming to a close on the East End of Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome. A misstep at a dinner party, and the older man she’s been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city. With few resources and a waterlogged phone, but gifted with an ability to navigate the desires of others, Alex stays on Long Island and drifts like a ghost through the hedged lanes, gated driveways, and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world that is, at first, closed to her.

Great book with terrible ending

I can’t stand books that leave the reader hanging at the end. I feel like it’s not my job to finish the story. The story up until that point was fantastic but ended abruptly with multiple loose ends.
