"Alex Jennings' impeccable accent keeps the already propulsive novel quite engaging, and moving like a steam train about to run you over."—Vulture

"Narrator Alex Jennings offers a sparkling performance, providing layered character portraits and enlivening the story with British, American, and Greek accents...listeners who enjoy whodunits and closed-circle mysteries will want to pick this one up."—Library Journal

"Jennings confidently, confidentially embodies [the ensemble]: elegant Lara, gruff Jason, earnest Leo, biting Kate, protective Agathi, unassuming Nikos. Elliott, of course, gets star billing . . . and Jennings ensures his twists, pivots, and falsehoods are marvelously played out to the didn’t-see-that-coming final scene. The please oh-please pièce de resistance would be to put Jennings on screen in the inevitable celluloid adaptation to come."—Booklist

A masterfully paced thriller about a reclusive ex-movie star and her famous friends whose spontaneous trip to a private Greek island is upended by a murder—from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient

This is a tale of murder.

Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it?

Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex–movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

I tell you this because you may think you know this story. You probably read about it at the time―it caused a real stir in the tabloids, if you remember. It had all the necessary ingredients for a press sensation: a celebrity; a private island cut off by the wind…and a murder.

We found ourselves trapped there overnight. Our old friendships concealed hatred and a desire for revenge. What followed was a game of cat and mouse―a battle of wits, full of twists and turns, building to an unforgettable climax. The night ended in violence and death, as one of us was found murdered.

But who am I?

My name is Elliot Chase, and I’m going to tell you a story unlike any you’ve ever heard.

After the other 2 books, i fell like the author is trying too hard for a twist. it was ok, but a bit convoluted.

trying too hard

Well written, lots of twists and turns, and even a few easter eggs for those who have read Michaelides' other books. This is an especially good one for people who read a lot of mysteries because it gets very meta at times. And you have to know your way around a psychological thriller to appreciate what Michaelides has done here.

Another Winner from Michaelides!

Even though this author is famous for twists, it seems impossible how well he is able to continuously and artfully execute them down to the last sentence of the book! The writing is intelligent, deeply symbolic, and psychologically informed. One of the richest books in layered meaning, suspense, and character depth ever composed.

A SMASH MASTERPIECE from a TRUE MASTER AUTHOR

This was a slow burn and you really have to pay attention because there’s a lot of characters and backstory. But hang on! All the build up is worth the time! I thought in the beginning the narrator was going to kill it for me but it actually fit the character he was reading for. Wonderful! Makes me want to go back to The Silent Patient and the Maidens and then the Fury again!

I’ve waited for an Alex Michaelide’s story for a long time..

It took a little getting used to the narrator’s voice/cadence, but it didn’t last long. Soon I was swept into the story wondering what was going to happen next and to whom. I’d probably give this story a 4 1/2 overall - but only because his last book was a 5+!

I love the authors ability to keep you guessing.

This one was slow from beginning to end. By the climax of the plot I no longer cared what actually happened.

The first two books were better

Fun storytelling on a remote island with the best of friends that ends in murder

Storytelling that kept you turning pages

This author has a way of fooling you, and giving you pause. However, the story was drawn out a bit too much. I found myself wanting him to get to the conclusion earlier than it did.

Good story, but long

Was rich in literary references and history. An iconic narrator who is a constant eye roll and pure entertainment.

Not a mystery, but a fascinating study of character.

This was a good book but definitely not on the level of the author's previous two. There is a lot of retelling of the story to get the final plot twist to make sense which makes it seem forced.

Good but not the best
