not sure where all the rave reviews are coming from. I don't dislike the story but nothing outstanding so far. typical wuxia genre. more power levels than actually leveling up. world building is a little slow. not much depth in characters or opponents ability so far. counters to oppenents are introduced before we even really learn much about opponents themselves or their skills. I'll be getting the second book as it's still a good filler while waiting for other releases.

Death Lords. Celebrations. And arcanists plotting to destroy Astra Academy from within. Gray Lexly thought he had defeated the fragment of Death Lord Deimos, but Gray's dreams are now haunted by a sinister ruler of the abyssal hells. Luckily for everyone in Astra Academy, it seems Deimos won't be escaping the dreamscape anytime soon. Unfortunately for Gray, this means he's stuck with the Death Lord. So, when Deimos's followers—and enemies—come looking for him, it's Gray who stands in their way.

Story
When quiet Orrin and his extroverted best friend, Daniel, were transported to a strange RPG-based world, not much changed between them. Daniel became a hero of legend, while Orrin remained his unobtrusive shadow. Only when they faced a particularly lethal foe did Orrin step out of his comfort zone and display his true worth—with powers he didn't know he had. Of course, Daniel got all the glory, but Orrin doesn't mind. He's just happy they're both still alive.

felt rushed
Reviewed: 08-27-24
enjoyed the first book and was really looking forward to the second book. early parts of the book flowed well but towards the end there things got disjointed and had people acting out of character with their choices. less focus on skills and fights and more on politics. cliff hanger at the end just felt rushed and unnecessary. hoping everything ties together in the 3rd novel.
if this isn't high on your list recommend waiting for the next book to listen together.

Story
When it comes to action and adventure, every hero needs a good sidekick. Holmes has Watson, Batman has Robin, and Daniel has . . . Orrin. More like brothers than friends, they always have each other's backs. And as Daniel is the big, strong, handsome type, Orrin is more than happy to remain in his shadow at school, at parties, pretty much everywhere. Then things take a turn for the truly weird when a terrible accident catapults the pair into a world totally unlike their own, in which the rules of a role-playing game hold sway.

smooth story

robotic voice comments are definitely exaggerated. although an odd choice to include it in the speech as well as the skills reading, it's not a deal breaker. listen to the sample to see if it bothers you.
outside of that the story was well done without relying on plot armor for events. characters were well developed
