Story
In Neo Babylon, your neural implant is your identity. You use it as your credit card, to surf the Altnet, to chat with friends, to login to work or school, and to be pestered by advertisements. Anyone without one is cut off from society. Nick can’t get a neural implant. That fact turns his daily life into hell, but the city's underworld has its plans for him. Being invisible to the city’s omnipresent tracking has its perks. Without a neural presence, he’s someone who is felt but not seen—a wraith.

Fun Sci-fi Noir

First I'd like to remark that this book is an entertaining mix of solid world building, fun characters, and decent mystery solving. If you're familiar with KD, then you may notice that this book and this series in general is less focused on overt sexual acts and more teasing. Overall an enjoyable read with a new setting from this fantastic author.

Story
Cyril woke up in a hospital bed with a ruined body and no memory of how it happened. His only chance at a normal life was agreeing to a splicer's experiment with a twisted condition: he was forbidden to learn the circumstances surrounding his injuries. Rose saved a life and wound up exiled from her gang, friendless and broke in Oolytau. Given an out by a notorious mob boss, she found herself in the Tracts working with a man who might be everything she never knew she needed.

Very interesting. Explores a concept I thought of but never expected any exploration. Last story was pretty dark and so is this one. Keep that in mind as you proceed.

Anyone that listens to Anya should know that her characters go through trials and this one is no different. Take heart that any misgivings you may have with the ending should be set aside understanding that we are not at the end of the journey.

Story
Meanwhile, Underqueen Avina attempts to bring stability back to Harvestglade while Petra searches desperately for the traitors and their hostage. Torn between her concern for Koa and her anxiety for her esper, Avina can do little else but wait. At least, until word from her fellow underqueens arrives requesting her presence at a conference to determine the future of the realm. With Harvestglade still near to full strength, it’s a long awaited and rather cathartic reversal of roles to set off knowing this time, her rivals will take her perspective seriously.

I love the story so far and can't wait to see how it ends. I know some listeners were disappointed by the end of the last book but I knew she would handle it well and the solution wasn't far from my guess. This one is a ride for sure.

This is the first book of Annabelle's I've heard and one of several I've tried out from Virgil. Best Virgil Knightley story I've heard so far. Audiobook is also well performed and all the better for it. Any fan of the genre should check it out.

Baffled
Reviewed: 06-04-23
I'm baffled. I haven't read anything that got through to publishing, let alone got recorded as an audiobook, that had perspective errors before. Only about an hour in and there are three first person statements in the middle of passages. Other times it seems to be third person omniscient. These don't mix. Overall the story is fine and I know this is nerdy as hell but it irked me.
Edit - I still can't tell if it's intentional. The we's and us' seem to crop up and then disappear again back into third person. It has to be a mistake. Also, while the performance is usually fine, the Australian accent seems really harsh in the intimate moments. The story is fine but if either of these issues bother you you may want to give it a pass.

I love Robertson. I feel all his books should be given a fair shake. His characters have a lot of life and reasonably deal with time in ways that others pack into to short a time span for things to reasonably occur. Demon's Throne is excellent for those very reasons.

Story
Rys awakes to the smell of blood and nearly two thousand years of dust. Maybe he overslept a little too long. Once, he was a great champion and general in the demonic empire that ruled the world. Now, he’s been erased from history. He’ll need to remind the world of the price of forgetfulness. Now is the time to build his own empire, as the ancient powers of his time are long gone. Rys has an archipelago to conquer, women interested in extending their bloodline with him, and a mysterious labyrinth that holds the secret to why he was sealed away to begin with.

Another examplar of the genre
Reviewed: 01-15-23
This is the exact type of story that I was looking for when I started reading this genre. I stumbled onto haremlit and was baffled by how popular it was despite the apparent shallowness. While this book is still just as steamy as the genre would imply, it doesn't use that as an excuse not to tell a good story. Everything is well knit and well executed. I have nothing to critique which is rare for me. I am excited to continue this series.

Smartly written fantasy story
Reviewed: 01-10-23
I really enjoy this setting and the premise here. I think KD is really using the time travel element for all it's worth. It's like a power fantasy without the "power" and I think it's a great subversion of expectations. Despite being harem-lit, I don't get the feeling of cardboard plot lines that so often plague the genre and makes me want to give up on trying new stories. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series and to checking out the others from KD.
