Story
The Candy House opens with the staggeringly brilliant Bix Bouton, whose company, Mandala, is so successful that he is “one of those tech demi-gods with whom we’re all on a first name basis.” Bix is forty, with four kids, restless, and desperate for a new idea, when he stumbles into a conversation group, mostly Columbia professors, one of whom is experimenting with downloading or “externalizing” memory. Within a decade, Bix’s new technology, “Own Your Unconscious”—which allows you access to every memory you’ve ever had, and to share your memories in exchange for access to the memories of others—has seduced multitudes.

Incredible story and world building and complex, detailed characters. Limp, disconnected and unsatisfying ending that fails to justify the tantalizing subject matter with any real landing or context for the many layers, perspectives and storylines - which are mostly told beautifully. Worth the read, though. Really wonderful parallel reality possibilities and consequences.

Fairly boring for Heyer
Reviewed: 07-21-20
Narration needed to be slowed down a bit, but was otherwise great. Story was not quite boring, but skimmed the edges of it. Dialogue and relationships were slightly tedious (for Heyer, who I typically enjoy thoroughly). Could have been told in half the time.

Horatia Winwood is the youngest and the least attractive of the three Winwood sisters. She also has a stammer. But when the enigmatic and eminently eligible Earl of Rule offers for her oldest sister’s hand – a match that makes financial and social sense, but would break her heart – it is Horatia who takes matters into her own impetuous hands. Can she save her family’s fortune?

Couldn’t get through it
Reviewed: 07-01-20
Contradicting herself as both smart and wise as well as spoiled, greedy and gullible, the heroine disappoints. This book lacks the intimacy and finely wrought dialogue that I’ve experienced in Heyers’ other wonderful books. The characters seem superficial and to have very little to do with one another and no evidence is given for any sort of real relationship. That the audiobook is abridged isn’t apparent prior to the reading. Maybe the unabridged story is better?

Story
Call Me by Your Name first swept across the world in 2007. It is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' cliffside mansion on the Italian Riviera. During the restless summer weeks, unrelenting but buried currents of obsession, fascination, and desire intensify their passion as they test the charged ground between them and verge toward the one thing both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy.

Implausible story for tweens. Not a terrible story, just silly and implausible characters who are all seemingly unaware of *everything*. Too bad.

Amazing concept and story
Reviewed: 04-15-16
While the story and concept (including details) are amazing, the characters and dialogue all seem forced and unnatural. While 80's pop culture is well-done and helps to drive the story really well, Current pop culture references are lame in current time and especially so when projected onto the future. LOVE the creative concept and story though!

Story
Each day we face a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We are led to believe that if we could only look perfect and lead perfect lives, we'd no longer feel inadequate. So most of us perform, please, and perfect, all the while thinking, What if I can't keep all of these balls in the air? Why isn't everyone else working harder and living up to my expectations? What will people think if I fail or give up? When can I stop proving myself?
