Once a proud Senator in Imperial Rome, Marius is kidnapped and forced into that dark realm of blood, where he is made a protector of the Queen and King of the vampires - in whom the core of the supernatural race resides. Through his eyes we see the fall of pagan Rome to the Emperor Constantine, the horrific sack of the Eternal City at the hands of the Visigoths, and the vile aftermath of the Black Death. Ultimately restored by the beauty of the Renaissance, Marius becomes a painter, living dangerously yet happily among mortals, and giving his heart to the great master Botticelli, to the bewitching courtesan Bianca, and to the mysterious young apprentice Armand. But it is in the present day, deep in the jungle, when Marius will meet his fate seeking justice from the oldest vampires in the world....

Marius has always been an interesting character in the series and it was cool to see him fleshed out here. I think it is a little ironic that Marius is considered to be “the wise one” but he consistently makes the wrong decisions. His decision to abandon pandora plagued him for centuries. His decision to part with Avechus, marl, and Zenobia ultimately led to that group dissolving and Marius being alone for nearly a millennium. His refusal to save Armand led to him being alienated from his son permanently. And lastly his desperation to go back to pandora led to him fumbling the greatest thing to ever happen to him, Bianca. Bianca loved him unconditionally and clearly was the most compatible companion he ever had, and yet he abandoned her as soon as pandora was back on the table. He truly is a fool for the vampires.
On a second note, what was the deal with thorn? We barely got any of his story, yet we are supposed to understand why he wanted to kill Maharet and why he gave her his eyes/ wanted to be chained up by her? Also how did thorn overpower Maharet and Makare too? Maharet and Marius were strong enough to subdue Lestat (a character who drank extensively from akasha and who also drank from jesus christ lol) but they couldn’t overpower Thorn?
Maurius was a fool for vampires

What did you love best about Blood and Gold?
The depth. It can't fully be understood without the context of the others in the Chronicles. It would be an abridged version if you read it alone. Mrs. Anne did a good job of weaving the necessary older bits into this book, so we can grasp the whole of his character. That said, there are too many years to adequately cover.Would you recommend Blood and Gold to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes, a lover of the Chronicles has to read this one. He's a common thread among the others. He's as large a character as Lestat, Louis, Armand...What does Roger Rees bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His voice gave us all the complexities of Marius' character; it was desperate, commanding, regal, etc..I also appreciated the fresh sound of Thorn.
Who was the most memorable character of Blood and Gold and why?
Besides Marius himself? Pandora? Their longing for each other over all the years appeals to my romantic side. SPOILER ALERT: Their one night together after all the years was a disappointment, not just because it lasted only a night, but because it did an injustice to the many years apart.Any additional comments?
A book from Maharet's perspective would be good.Marius as vividly alive and compelling as Lestat.
