Story
One Sunday in the spring of 1988, a woman living on a reservation in North Dakota is attacked. The details of the crime are slow to surface as Geraldine Coutts is traumatized and reluctant to relive or reveal what happened, either to the police or to her husband, Bazil, and 13-year-old son, Joe. In one day, Joe's life is irrevocably transformed. He tries to heal his mother, but she will not leave her bed and slips into an abyss of solitude. Increasingly alone, Joe finds himself thrust prematurely into an adult world for which he is ill prepared.

Never a Disappointment
Reviewed: 08-19-21
I started with La Rose 5 years ago and I have loved EVERY BOOK by Ms Erdrich. I love the way of life and the love of family. As with everyone of Ms. Erdrich’s books, at the end, it seems like a camera is taking in all the main characters and the answers to all the mysteries are revealed as the camera is pulling away. I would like to believe that t really happens that way. I’ll give it a “10”

Story
Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

Inspirational and historical.
Reviewed: 10-18-17
This is an apt and and perfect final conclusion to the two preceding books, "Fall of Giants" and "Winter of the World". Mr. Follett so beautifully divided up the detailed historical accounts of 4 dominant countries. USA, Great Britain, Germany and Russia following family characters that intertwined from WWI until the inauguration of President Obama. Listening to all three books made me think of the quote, "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it". The true accounts flowed and had my interest. I give all three of the books the "max" in ratings.

Very Disappointed
Reviewed: 07-26-16
Mr. Hills previous book, "NOS4A2" was so good and I wrongly expected a good book. For me it was predictable, lacked imagination and I would have to say adolescent. The problem is I wouldn't allow my adolescent child or grandchild to read it because of the language, story line and violence. I do not recommend this book.

A book with sustenance!

I thought it was a beautiful love story. I have never read a novel involving an American woman and a Chinese man. Very deep and appropriately sensual. A novel that you can sink your teeth into. Ms Mones clearly did Her homework.

Now one of my 4 favorite books over 35 year period
Reviewed: 04-11-10
There are only 3 other books that fall into the category of the best all time books and they are "Gone With The Wind"; "The Thorn Birds" and "East of Eden". I got so caught up in the characters and the story, I did not want it to end. You felt like you knew the 3-main sibling characters intimately. I loved it!
