About this listen
Audie Award Finalist, Original Work, 2016
Based on the best-selling, award-winning graphic novel series Locke & Key - written by acclaimed suspense novelist Joe Hill (NOS4A2, Horns) and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez - this multicast, fully dramatized audio production brings the images and words to life.
A brutal and tragic event drives the Locke family from their home in California to the relative safety of their ancestral estate in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, an old house with powerful keys and fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. As siblings Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke discover the secrets of the old house, they also find that it's home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all....
Featuring performances by Haley Joel Osment (Entourage, The Sixth Sense), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Kate Mulgrew (Orange Is the New Black, Star Trek: Voyager), Joe Hill, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Stephen King (The Stand, 11-22-63), as well as a cast of more than 50 voice actors, this audio production preserves the heart-stopping impact of the graphic novel's astounding artwork through the use of richly imagined sound design and a powerful original score.
*Locke & Key contains explicit language and adult situations.

Critic reviews
"The concepts in this production, based on a graphic novel, are perfectly executed by a full cast.... Kate Mulgrew leads the way with her perfect portrayal of an ancient grandmother with an evil streak." (AudioFile)

Story
Martin Lorensen is a twenty-three-year-old counselor for disturbed teenagers. He’s bright, compassionate, attractive, and outgoing. He’s also—and this is the most interesting thing—not dead. Martin has improbably survived not one but two deadly disasters that claimed dozens of lives. The kid is riding one hell of a lucky streak. Two federal agents think there is something darker at play. Now that they’ve arranged to interview Martin, they want answers. Martin is ready to share everything he knows. One thing is for certain: when it comes to escaping death, luck doesn’t figure into it at all.

The pain of a failed marriage and a family torn apart is cruel and lingering. Men are not spared this agony when a marriage ends. Viewing images posted on social media of family events while sitting alone on the outside looking in is a torture not fitting for most people. While at the same time we men sometimes just let things happen, like watching a sinking ship go down instead of repairing the breaches causing it to sink. It's difficult to find books that talk directly to men about the ways women respond in relationships and how we cab more effectively and proactively become engaged in ...

Ignatius Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke up the next morning with a thunderous hangover, a raging headache, and a pair of horns growing from his temples. At first Ig thought the horns were a hallucination, the product of a mind damaged by rage and grief. He had spent the last year in a lonely, private purgatory, following the death of his beloved, Merrin Williams, who was raped and murdered under inexplicable circumstances.

Why? Because it's not narrated. This is an audio play, much like what people used to listen to on the radio a hundred years ago or so. Yes, there are many different voice actors, and yes you do have to pay attention to follow the plot. But it's worth it.
I enjoyed the hell out of this and want to find more audiobooks in this vein. It's one thing for a narrator to describe a scream, it's quite another to hear the actual terror and pain.
Folks, this is an audio play.

If you could sum up FREE: Locke & Key in three words, what would they be?
brilliant comic adaptationWhat about the narrators’s performance did you like?
I have been 'iffy' about listening to cast productions. I really enjoyed this.Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I could NOT stop listening. Despite having read the comic, it felt 'new'Any additional comments?
I am a Joe Hill fan and have read the Locke & Key graphic book series. Hill and Rodriguez talked about the coming audio at a panel I attended and I preordered the book right then and there. I generally avoid cast productions, but gave this a shot. I thoroughly enjoyed this adaptation. The cast was brilliant. I would say the one negative was the music break in between books was a tad long. Other than that, this book was well worth my time and I expect I will listen to it a few more times...Somehow, they made it work...

The team behind this did an awesome job bringing a comic book series to life. It is a great build up to Halloween, read and enjoy but be prepared to be scared.
An amazing Halloween gift from Joe Hill and audible.com.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. The experience of the different voices helped keep the people separate as the dark story unfolds in unexpected ways.Any additional comments?
This was most definitely an interesting listen. I enjoyed all the different voices as the story unfolds. There are many secrets in this house, and following the Locke family through many dangers and unusual situations kept me listening. Having the different actors helped keep the people straight. This set consists of several books though none truly end as the story focus just changes and characters resurface. There are a few moments when I felt that a visual was needed, but it did not take away from the story. Be prepared for the dark nature of this story.I received this as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.

Is there anything you would change about this book?
I think the book itself is probably fine. It was just difficult to follow when listening to it. Reading it may have been better. What did you like best about this story?
the music and its eeriness.Did the narrators do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
not sure their style did the book justiceIf this book were a movie would you go see it?
YES!I found it difficult to follow
