Story
In September 2016, Jerry Stahl was feeling nervous on the eve of a two-week trip across Poland and Germany. But it was not just the stops at Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Dachau that gave him anxiety. It was the fact that he would be traveling with two dozen strangers, by bus. In a tour group. And he was not a tour-group kind of guy. The decision to visit Holocaust-world did not come easy. Stahl's lifelong depression at an all-time high, his career and personal life at an all-time low, he had the idea to go on a trip where the despair he was feeling would be appropriate.

I loved every moment. So much so that I’m going to listen again after I finish this review. It’s funny in places it shouldn’t be which is very helpful with the subject matter. For the record you MUST read “This Way to the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen” regardless if you read this book or not.

Bronson Pinchot for the win!

I had no idea what I was getting into. I knew that I loved Bronson’s narrations so I went with it. Once I got over the puppies incident I was hooked. I liked that I couldn’t tell if it was pro or con religion.

Story
At the age of 14, György Köves is plucked from his home in a Jewish section of Budapest and, without any particular malice, placed on a train to Auschwitz. He does not understand the reason for his fate. He doesn't particularly think of himself as Jewish. And his fellow prisoners, who decry his lack of Yiddish, keep telling him, "You are no Jew." In the lowest circle of the Holocaust, György remains an outsider.

A different perspective
Reviewed: 07-21-23
I believe the point of the book was to express the sometimes “mundane” as one reviewer suggests. As the author is a Holocaust survivor I don’t believe it was mundane to him rather he’s trying to express the less horrifying yet just as important; his every day emotions. No one can imagine a concentration camp, only the people who experienced it can share their imprisonment. I enjoyed the narrator very much.

Pamela Adlon is a fantastic narrator. My view wafted back and forth as information came to light. I couldn’t form a concrete answer for myself. Would love more of these types of stories. (Documented inquiries that is)
Some technical difficulties in the last chapter.

Perfect narration of a moving memoir!

After finishing this book, I wanted to go back in time to meet the young Sledgehammer. I also wanted to adopt Joe Mazzello who brought me to tears several times as the voice of E.B. Sledge. The HBO mini-series The Pacific was based upon this and other memoirs of marines serving in World War 2. I am so glad I was able to hear the full story of E.B, Sledge in his own words. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

I listened to this book after watching The Pacific HBO mini-series. James Badge Dale did such a fantastic narration that I felt I was watching another performance of The Pacific. Helmet for My Pillow was one of the books used in the making of the mini-series. I'm so glad I could get the actual story of Robert Leckie, in addition to the "based upon" version. I highly recommend this experience.
