Story
With a disarming mix of charm and Tammany-hewn toughness, Rosenberg began her career in public relations in 1920s Manhattan. As FDR's unofficial adviser, Rosenberg soon wielded enormous influence—no less potent for being subtle. Her extraordinary career continued after his death. By 1950, she was tapped to become the assistant secretary of defense—the highest position ever held by a woman in the US military—prompting Senator Joe McCarthy to wage an unsuccessful smear campaign against her.

Fascinating Story, Well Told

I loved this book. It’s a fascinating, well told account of Rosenberg’s service and life. It’s also well narrated, although the narrator mispronounced a few words.

Story
Beginning in the predawn hours of airports in the Northeast, we meet the ticket agents who unknowingly usher terrorists onto their flights, and the flight attendants inside the hijacked planes. In New York City, first responders confront a scene of unimaginable horror at the Twin Towers. From a secret bunker underneath the White House, officials watch for incoming planes on radar. Aboard the small number of unarmed fighter jets in the air, pilots make a pact to fly into a hijacked airliner if necessary to bring it down.

This audiobook is exceptionally well done. The content is riveting and presents the story of 9/11 from a grassroots, “micro” level. In turn, the narrators did an outstanding job of communicating that story. Very pleased.

Story
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Style > Substance

The narration was excellent. The author has a vividly descriptive writing style. But, the story itself is pretty boring and thus incongruous with all of the flowery details. The style thus made the audiobook inordinately long for me.

Story
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

I’ve never seen a soap opera, but this audiobook is exactly what I’d imagine that a soap opera is like. Pretty corny and predictable, and I’m really surprised that it is getting such good reviews.

Story
A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".

Great Story - Sometimes-Disappointing Narration

Offerman was great when playing the role of the author-narrator. However, he made a mediocre effort to play the characters when there was dialogue in the book. It was often tough to discern one character from another.

Story
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Interesting Story | Mediocre Presentation
Reviewed: 11-15-19
I'm a bit surprised that this audiobook is so highly rated. I think the fundamental storyline is very interesting. However, I was disappointed and mildly annoyed by how the story was presented. The narration was often grating, particularly when the author / narrator attempted to mimic other characters' voices.

Story
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

I’ve never watched his show, and I only ordered this book because I was trying to get rid of a credit and the book got such good reviews. I had no idea what to expect, but I’m so glad that I ordered it. It’s a brilliant overcoming-the-odds story that’s brilliantly (and often hilariously) told. The “Go Hitler” chapter was alone worth the credit and time, and I hadn’t laughed so hard in a very long time. It’s one of those books that I couldn’t put down and was a bit sad when it was over. Highly recommend.

Tough for me to Process via Audiobook
Reviewed: 08-26-19
This is one of those rare instances in which the audiobook medium impeded my enjoyment of the book. The subject matter is interesting, I could certainly follow his basic conclusions, and I think he did a nice job of attempting to simplify the analysis underlying his conclusions. That said, although I have three graduate degrees (in non-scientific disciplines...), it was often difficult for me to process and internalize his explanations via the audiobook format. In that respect, I likely would’ve enjoyed the book more in a text format.

Reviewed: 07-29-19
I read the book years ago shortly after it was published. I'd given away the book, and my Audible credits were piling up, so I used a credit on the audiobook before the movie release. I loved the book (again...), and I thought the narrator did a great job. Now, here's hoping that the movie is as good as both!

Set in Italy during World War II, this is the story of the incomparable, malingering bombardier Yossarian, a hero who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemy - it is his own army, which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from the perilous missions he's assigned, he'll be in violation of Catch-22.

Abbott & Costello + M*A*S*H = Catch-22
Reviewed: 07-23-19
This book had been on my reading list for many years, so I decided to use one of my quickly-accumulating Audible credits on it. Although I enjoyed certain story lines and characters in the book, I was mostly disappointed with the book and found myself just wanting it to end. Indeed, for me, the best part of the audiobook was when I discovered that the final 40+ minute chapter was a superfluous "bonus" reading by Joseph Heller that I didn't need to hear.
I guess I can see why the book might've been popular when it was first published and perhaps in the few years thereafter. But, I'm not exactly sure how or why this book remains so popular and on so many must-read lists circa 2019. As is suggested by the headline of my review, it struck me as being a more obnoxious and scattered version of M*A*S*H.
I thought the narration was good overall. That is, I'm inclined to conclude that the annoying aspects of the narration were because of the book rather than because of how the narrator was reading the book.
