Story
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

Story was well written and it seems like RF Kuang did a lot of research for this. I enjoyed the narration. But I thought it was a very slow and I did not really enjoy it.

Good pace/quick read. I like the journey the Jason's goes through but the overall lesson learned is ehh. Wished it went more into the science Jason's POV.

If you care for quality, don't read it
Reviewed: 01-06-25
Horribly written characters and weak world building. You cannot possible believe that this arrogant, idiotic, 18-yr-old, with anger issues is the best assassin out there. Which is why SJM has to constantly remind you. The FMC got two names but she's constantly being referred to as the assassin every chapter. Just awful. Typical love triangle trope with a playboy and a guy who can't smile. God gave me ears and I have forsaken him.
Narrator did their job. I'm sorry I had to -1 because the MC is that annoying.

Great magic concept, lacked a bit
Reviewed: 12-29-24
These two books by Gillig got me out of a reading stump. Mainly because all of the fantasy books were starting to sound the same but in different fonts. I liked the magic cards in this one, but Gillig should've spent more time with world building and flushing out each card. Only a handful of them were used and focused on in both books. The consequences of using them varies and didn't seem fair. Other than that, I enjoyed the story of the backstories and the POVs of the MCs.

Slow and Theater-centered

Personally not for me. You have to love theater and Shakespeare. It was a rough start to get through all that to the murder mystery plot. Then it got slow again and I got bored. I couldn't finish it. But the narrator did a good job.

Entertaining listen but weak story
Reviewed: 11-22-24
This was fun to listen to while multitasking, but would suck to read. The story follows a "villainous" main character and her plan to get power and independence by courting the shadow king. Sounds cool and all but there's little to no world building, most of which was from a conversation. From the bare description, it's like Bridgeton-esque with some magic (by some, only one person has it). The first sentence is what got me to get this book, and that plot was quickly swept away... Half of the book was the main character's sewing/fashion hobby. If you don't care for good plot, world building and character development, then this is for you. Narration was good.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Once upon a time vibes

If Stephen King wrong the show Once Upon a Time. I liked the fairy tales converged in one world. However, it took the majority of the book to get from mc world to the actual fairy tale portion. I was wondering if I was listening to the wrong book at first because it was just about a teen (who sounded like an old man) taking care of another old man for what felt like the entirety of the book. And then the fairy tales happens. Slow but good. I held on for Radar tbh.

I personally like the first book better. I only liked the beginning and last few chapters of this one. The rest was a pain to get through. It was so slow and romance felt unnecessary. I was hoping it'll focus more on building up her powers, the kingdom, aftermath of first book, war, etc with the romance being in the background. But every turn was mc crying and lusting. It sucked but narrator was good.
