Story
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Should have been a much shorter novella

First of all, I skipped all of the bits about bees. This was just filler. The plot was thin, but would have been good for a one hour tv show. Honestly, just another formulaic novel grasping onto the themes of the moment. Excellent narration. Can't anyone channel a little Austen and write a novel with some humor? Ugh.

Discouraging tripe

This is one of the worst memoirs I've ever read. Meant to inspire patriotism, it only made me feel that the men in espionage were idiotic, short-sighted, and moronic. They repeat the same mistakes over and over. Nothing is gained. Lives are lost.

Complex, but so worth it!

I admit that I listened to this book twice so that I could wring every drop of excellence out of the characters and plot. I read books to fall in love with the characters. Since I am already loving Robin and Strike, I was impatient for this book to arrive. I was not disappointed. I have to say that it took some work to make sense of the plot minutiae, but it was worth every minute. As with novels by Jane Austen and James Herrriot, I'll re-listen to this book often. So enjoyable! Also, Robert Glenister is a great narrator - just perfect.

Tried to be Dickens, but full of melodrama

Um. I felt bad for the narrator, who was very good. Read this for bookclub. The writing is repetitive. Characters are either villains or angels. The death scenes are gratuitously gory (perhaps realistic), and the deaths seem to come just in time to solve a plot problem. All the blankets are threadbare and all the hearts are broken, until everything is neatly made into a happy ending.

Nobody in the world is as “in touch with their feelings” as these teenagers. Whitebread characters of no interest, along with an overly long plot make for a painful read.
