About this listen

From the moment she first learned to read, literary genius Darcy Wells has spent most of her time living in the worlds of her books. There, she can avoid the crushing reality of her mother’s hoarding and pretend her life is simply ordinary. But when a new property manager becomes more active in the upkeep of their apartment complex, the only home Darcy has ever known outside of her books suddenly hangs in the balance.

While Darcy is struggling to survive beneath the weight of her mother’s compulsive shopping, Asher Fleet, a former teen pilot with an unexpectedly shattered future, walks into the bookstore where she works...and straight into her heart. For the first time in her life, Darcy can’t seem to find the right words. Fairy tales are one thing, but real love makes her want to hide inside her carefully constructed ink-and-paper bomb shelter.

Still, after spending her whole life keeping people out, something about Asher makes Darcy want to open up. But securing her own happily-ever-after will mean she’ll need to stop hiding and start living her own truth - even if it’s messy.

felt very real

The writer tackles some difficult subjects inside a charming teenage love and coming of age story. Supported by excellent transparent narration, with distinct voices for characters.

Very well done. Not my typical genre or characters, yet worth the time. If anything about the description catches your interest, definitely give it a try!

hate the ending plot twist

This is a fairytale... hoarding isn't this easy. Also this is borderline offensive to those that rely on family for infant care. Many cultures send their baby away to another country or leave their baby to go to another country to work. What this is wrong? What all these kids should be like Darcy and get all pissy at their mother? CANNOT believe this ending.

Just... wow

The way the story builds make you feel how Darcy feels when she experiences her various struggles in love, family, and acceptance. Brittany Pressley, the narrator, had connected me to this story unlike anything else.

Just great!

This book was fantastic! It's everything I love about YA books. The story was developed but not overly dramatic. My favorite kind of books are when the side characters are developed, which is exactly what happens here. There's a truly thought out and realized world.

Kind of boring

This book took a long time to get to the point. I did not enjoy it as much as others.

Excellent book.

I was lost in this book. The author did an amazing job of building the story. I found myself rooting for Darcy and Asher and Mrs. Wells.. It was a really good story...

Formulaic, unrealistic.

Nobody in the world is as “in touch with their feelings” as these teenagers. Whitebread characters of no interest, along with an overly long plot make for a painful read.
