Story
Like many well-to-do Upper East Siders over the age of 65, esteemed art appraiser Percival Skinner had planned to spend his retirement living off his savings. But a market correction has left him living below his prior means. One day he’s visited by a dapper fixer in search of a famous work by a Renaissance master. Skinner knows the work well: The original was owned by his ancestor, and was passed down through his family over the generations. If, as an intermediary, he can coordinate a sale, a small fortune awaits. Problem is, he might not be the only one on the make.

An Unusual Story
Reviewed: 07-02-23
A great short story narrated by John Lithgow! You can probably figure out that I really enjoyed it based on my giving all three aspects five stars: Overall, Performance, and Story.
The story is about a fragment of the titled artist's Renaissance painting, The Annunciation. The fragment part of the story is a little far-fetched, but it's foundational to the rest of the story. Sometimes you've got to accept the fantastic for the sake of the story. At least, that's what I do, some.

Story
Dr. Margo Dunlop is at a crossroads. Her adoptive mom just passed away, and Margo misses her so much she can't begin to empty the house - or, it seems, get her brother on the phone. Not to mention she's newly single, secretly pregnant, and worried about her best friend's dangerous relationship. In an effort to cheer herself up she goes in search of her birth mother. Instead she finds Nikki, her mother's sister. Aunt Nikki isn't what Margo expects, and she brings upsetting news: Margo's mother is dead.

I've read better.

Not really my favorite of the author's books. It wasn't bad, though, just that some of the others were better, imho. And it could easily been just a bad day for me.
But if you like the author, or even if you don't, please don't let my opinions keep you away from this one: I'm a little moody with my reading, and it could easily have been a bad day, as I mentioned.

Frankie Elkin is an average middle-aged woman, a recovering alcoholic with more regrets than belongings. But she spends her life doing what no one else will - searching for missing people the world has stopped looking for. When the police have given up, when the public no longer remembers, when the media has never paid attention, Frankie starts looking. Listened nonstop!

Could not put this story down, so I carried it with me all day! I had some fruit to preserve so I listened while I worked; I needed to eat, so the story accompanied me back to the kitchen to cook; fed the cat so we both listened while I prepared her dinner. The rest of the day, I just sat and listened. It's been a while since I have spent time with Lisa's writing, it was great to hear her "voice" again.
Narration was excellent as well. So good that I didn't hear her at all, her narration became all of one piece with the story. I have no complaints about her work at all!
And the story itself was also perfect, in my opinion: as a thriller, I was surely thrilled. As a mystery, I definitely was mystified, didn't figure out who the bad guys were until they were revealed - usually I figure it out a little sooner).
The only little thing I might complain about if that was my inclination was the number of characters: I just couldn't keep track of them, I had to stop momentarily when a character was mentioned, to remember who the person was and how (or who) the person related to the story or to another character. Just a minor issue though, and it didn't take away any of my enjoyment of listening.

Story
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

I can't say enough about Sam Hell. The story was engaging (which I certainly did not expect and so allowed it to languish in my library since I added it, not long after it was published), the characters were believable, as was the story. I confess that I struggled with the problem Sister Charlotte (?) had; having grown up through 8th grade in parochial schools I've never experienced that. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention?
Anyway, I've repented of my original suspicions, expecting something entirely different. This was a very entertaining book. I loved it and it's one I'll recommend to everyone I know!

Actually, closer to 3.5 or 3.75. Not a big fan of ghost stories, especially ones so creepy. Higher rating because I finished it - against my better judgement, and now I'll probably have nightmares.
