Publisher's summary

In this new novella from the number one internationally best-selling author of The Sisters and The Murder Rule, Dervla McTiernan, a mother and son fighting to prove her innocence are reunited with an estranged friend—a detective who may hold the key to her freedom—as they’re forced to put their differences aside to uncover the shocking truth behind the crime.

When Clara Coleman is taken into custody, her teenage son, Sebastien, wastes no time before calling Simon Miller: an estranged family friend and detective in their old hometown of Hartford, Connecticut. Clara’s been arrested for the murder of Rachel Stapleton, a wealthy housewife and prominent figure in Lavender Valley, their well-to-do New Jersey suburb. But she swears she did not commit the crime.

Simon knows that Clara is not capable of murder and will do anything he can to prove her innocence—he’s felt indebted to the Coleman family since her husband, Will, Simon’s best friend, passed away years before. He arrives in Lavender Valley and hits the ground running on the case. With time, details surrounding the crime as well as the Colemans’ family history are revealed, unravelling the complex web of cause and effect that will finally bring the truth to light.

What did I just read

Hmmm. I always like Dervla McTiernan’s book. I’ve read them all. Maybe it’s just me but this one was off the mark. Maybe it’s just me but I’m not quite sure what I read.

Awesome short story

Honestly it was really good. I wouldn’t have minded if it had been a full book.

There were plenty of clues and suspects and I loved that some of my suspicions were correct. I didn’t have it all figured out, but the clues were there from the beginning. And there were some other odd almost out of place things that happened. It just made everything more intriguing.

The end was a bit convenient, but I was so happy with the story, it didn’t bother me. My parents and I listened to this on a 5 hour car trip. It was the most enjoyable trip home we’ve ever had. Highly recommend.

My first Audible Original

This is the first Audible Original book I’ve listened to and I was happily surprised. Good although the ending became evident too early to be a surprise, the solutions were very believable. I wasn’t too enthusiastic about the narration but it’s now 2:40 am and I have just finished listening. Didn’t want to stop in the middle! Good ghost story

This was an intriguing mystery!

I really liked this audiobook. I was surprised by who was the murderer, but glad that Simon and Sebastian got his mother, Clara, cleared! I didn't laugh or cry during this audiobook, so that's why only a four star rating.
