Story
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Absolutely wonderful

I’ve read every book by this author and this is my new favorite. Great narration, characters you can love, an inside look at running a bookstore and London before, during and after the war. One of those books you hate to finish reading.

I’m a huge fan of Susan Wiggs and have read all her books. This one took me by surprise. It was very hard to listen too at times but I’m SO glad I kept going. Once I listened to the Author’s note at the end it all made sense. I’m so glad I read the book and hope others will listen and learn as I did.

Not as good as the others so far
Reviewed: 07-21-22
I love this series and this author (including This Tender Land and Ordinary Grace). I’m reading the series in order; this was the least compelling so far. It doesn’t have the depth of story and characters nor the same detailed, layered sense of place as the previous books. Two particular romantic relationships are included, and I don’t know why. Maybe the author could use a break; he didn’t seem to have the energy to develop those relationships or even the main story. I hope the next book grabs me like most of the others so far.

But this morning is different: Last night, Elle and her oldest friend, Jonas, crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love.

Awful

I did not like the characters and could not relate to them. I could not see where this sad tale was going and gave up on something good ever happening. The same thing drones on; what's the point? I gave up with 7 hours left to go; (On a positive note, the book was recommended to me by a good friend who has good taste, so obviously others like it.)

Absolutely loved it!

I just finished listening and I'm about to listen all over again - that's how much I loved it We share the same birth year, we share the same last name, we share many common experiences growing up on the East Coast, we lived through the '60's together - so there's all that. But something about Jame's voice, his stories, his very real struggles, his insight into what led him to write some of his most famous songs - WOW. This memoir is a gift. I had tears in my eyes at the end.
Thank you Audible for making this so accessible. Thank you James Taylor for writing and singing your story. xo

I thought about giving up on this book early on, but I'm so glad i stuck with it. Pretty soon it all came together. Many different stories and wonderful characters. I was very sad when it ended. The narration is out of this world. John Lee is outstanding! I love the other titles I've listened to by Robin Pilcher, and now this one too.
