Publisher's summary

The New York Times bestselling author of The Lost and Found Bookstore returns to Perdita Street with a can’t-miss tale of friendship, hardship, redemption, and love between a San Francisco baker and a barbecue master from Texas.

Jerome “Sugar” Barnes learned the art of baking in his grandma’s bakery, also called Sugar, on historic Perdita Street in San Francisco. He supplies baked goods to the Lost and Found Bookshop across the street.

When the restaurant that shares his commercial kitchen loses its longtime tenant, a newcomer moves in: Margot Salton, a barbecue master from Texas.

Margot isn’t exactly on the run, but she needs a fresh start. She’s taken care of herself her whole life, pulling herself up by her fingernails to recover from trauma, and her dream has been to open a restaurant somewhere far, far from Texas. The shared kitchen with Jerome Sugar’s bakery is the perfect setup: a state-of-the-art kitchen and a vibrant neighborhood popular with tourists and locals.

Margot instantly takes to Jerome’s grandmother, the lively, opinionated Ida, and the older woman proves to be a good mentor. Margot thinks Jerome is gorgeous, and despite their different backgrounds their attraction is powerful—even though Jerome worries that Margot will simply move on from him once she’s found some peace and stability. But just as she starts to relax into a happy new future, Margot’s past in Texas comes back to haunt her…

Not My Favorite!

Story line was good but took too long to tell each character's story. not one of my favorite Wiggs books and I've read them all.

SO much to love about the book BUT...

So love Susan Wiggs stories and this one is a beauty including an amazing insight into race relations long ago amd now and the horror of rape in any generation. However the totally biased one-sided inclusion of Planned Parenthood ; totallty ignoring the negatives of abortion and its effdcts on women,, the attack on the Catholic church, and the unfair generalization of all police are all an unnecessary distraction/inclusion. The arbitrary inclusion of safe sex practices is also very surprising and illogical. Also illogical is the surprise at the rapist's family suing for libel and slander. These people are nuts! Of course they would use their political clout to go this route. Why is anyone surprised about this?

This caused me so much anxiety

I had to stop listening during the rape investigation. It made me so angry to know this is what female victims are subject to. This was a roughly edited book as well. There was one sentence about the Vietnam War draft that was repeated three times. Not sure who let that slip.

Thank you for helping us to be seen

Well, I did finish sugar and Salt . What a gift it is for giving people a glimpse into the lives of others, that we have judged unjustly. You addressed so many different issues in your book, and if people just find the courage to listen to all of it, it at least plants a seed. It’s so much easier to forgive people that are our friends, or family that make the same mistakes, and/or that have the lifestyles that you talk about in your books. My cognition has dropped so I am disabled with Long-Haul Covid and not able to work which has been a gift. I no longer spend my days struggling to just survive in the medical model, but I can follow my passions of research from all of the front line, doctors and listen to books like yours that allows people to be seen, understood, and gives them hope. My first review of your book was lengthy, and probably clearly shows that I have a cognitive deficit, but people like me many times don’t give up. We may lose our notes about issues that makes sense to us, but we just start over again in hopes that on a good day, we can pull it all together, and it’s best that we live alone, so we are not distracted by the judgments, and sometimes cruel ignorant acts of others. Words are so limiting, but thank you for your rich, deep writing of your characters and pearls of wisdom that can be gained by sharing, and not burying their realities.
Thank you for also putting your audiobooks on sale at times because funds are limited for many of us, and I never would’ve found you otherwise. You are now at the top of my audio authors, and I will continue to watch for your new works, and do the best that I can to support you❤️. Color me crazy, but Leo Buscaglia always said it gives us an immense amount of latitude in which to operate.❤️

Susan Wiggs has done it again. She has delivered an informative book with heart and soul. I did not read the summary of the book before I ordered it so it was an unexpected educational journey for me
