I learnt a lot from the tips and tools presented. The one that stood out most was how the importance of being silent. Noone can quote your silence and it gives both parties a chance for reflection. I intend to listen to the book again and to recommend it to my friends.

A wonderful musical.
Reviewed: 04-09-25
I liked the musical tracks that were used to enhance the narrative and bring a deeper understanding of the poignant moments. I love how the story was told, showing the honesty of love even when it was no longer shared by two.
I did not like the church pastor and his judgemental philosophy, purportedly taken from the Scriptures. I know a part of it that says, judge not or you shall be judged. Max showed how to treat others with kindness and leave the rest to God.
I liked how the narrators told the story, making it come to life as I listened. Another good book by the author as she took us through twists and unexpected turns.

Dangers of encouraging teenage crushes
Reviewed: 03-20-25
The author had twists that were surprisingly good. I never expected that ending. However, I did not like the breathy, false voice of the teacher in most of the story. I preferred hearing the actual male voice towards the end. The teenage meanness was not expected for such a long part of the story. I was beginning to think it was written for teenagers.
Overall, it kept me reading.

The difficult relationships between mothers and daughters.
Reviewed: 03-16-25
I liked how the author explored the difficult mother-daughter relationship. Telling the story from each individual's point of view reduced any false assumptions and allowed the listener to place actions and emotions in perspective.
I enjoyed the story and the insight into Mexican culture. Even though it was a generation removed each generation received information passed on through story telling. It is important to keep children grounded in their heritage.

Story
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

The traumatic life in poverty
Reviewed: 02-17-25
The author told her story without being overdramatic and had you feeling the anxiety and pain that she felt. At times my reaction was visceral as she told exactly how it is for all families who have to suffer through not having enough love, basic necessities, and acceptance as being a human being. Her story lives on today in many lives from which not many escape. It clearly made her who she is today yet not bitter towards her parents who did the best they could. She did feel loved after all.

If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

I loved the anecdotes from childhood that brought back memories of my childhood. Loved the portrayal of a Mom who was so pragmatic and left nuggets to carry one into adult experiences. Whoopi's narration was great, the book was funny and she had me feeling as if I was a fly on the wall.

The second novel in the wildly popular First Law Trilogy from New York Times best seller Joe Abercrombie. Superior Glokta has a problem. How do you defend a city surrounded by enemies and riddled with traitors, when your allies can by no means be trusted, and your predecessor vanished without a trace? It's enough to make a torturer want to run - if he could even walk without a stick. Northmen have spilled over the border of Angland and are spreading fire and death across the frozen country. Crown Prince Ladisla is poised to drive them back and win undying glory.

Rough and violent
Reviewed: 09-24-24
I did not like the degree of violence which was the core of the story and was graphically portrayed by the narrator. The story captured the mystery of the strange beings and the horrors of their fighting. I was often confused by the different groupings and their journeys consequently, I could only follow the story by latching on to a few names. If you like heads rolling and guts spilling, I would recommend this book.

Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, it never occurred to Uché Blackstock and her twin sister, Oni, that they would be anything but physicians. In the 1980s, their mother headed an organization of Black women physicians, and for years the girls watched these fiercely intelligent women in white coats tend to their patients and neighbors, host community health fairs, cure ills, and save lives.

An intimate look at disparities
Reviewed: 07-24-24
I liked the passionate yet objective look at how racism shows up in the American life and culture. The statistics shared gave authenticity to the health disparities and the harm they caused. The author's persistence in helping people of colour in whatever area she could was inspiring. We should all try to help another up the ladder as, for some, a little push or hand holding is all that is needed.
A well written story of which her Mom would be proud.
