I was 13 years old when President Kennedy was killed. I never believed the official version of his murder as there were too many details that did not make sense. I am satisfied at last to have all those details explained and to know the real history of the event that made such a difference to our country and the world.

The story has a fascinating plot played out by interesting characters. While Miss Marple has the clues mostly brought to her as she is physically unable to do much ferreting out herself, she unravels the mystery with her usual perception. Lucy Eylesbarrow is one of Agatha Christie’s most sparkling assistant sleuths.

It has been awhile since I first read this story. Listening to this audiobook has been a very moving experience. It is the second Agatha Christie mystery with an ending that brought tears to my eyes. I couldn’t help but feel real sympathy for the person who committed the first murder which arose from a real personal tragedy. This is one of Agatha Christie’s most exceptional creations!

“N or M?” has long been one of my favorite Agatha Christie mysteries! “The Secret Adversary” is a good story, too.

It’s hard to believe that anyone connected with producing this audiobook could have condoned the many mispronunciations and incorrect words in the reader’s poor performance.

As for the text itself, I don’t think that I really learned much of anything about Jane Austen and her works that I didn’t already know other than a few of her juvenile pieces that I had not heard of previously.

A Challenging Listen

In spite of the name, this is not — as the introduction says — a chronicle of the clash of arms between Germany and the Allies. Only a small portion of its 35 hours are devoted to battles and significant events of World War II. Instead, it DETAILS what the German Army did in the territories it occupied, life on the home front — notably the destruction caused by relentless Allied bombing of German cities, and the equally relentless violence that was visited upon the Jews and anyone else that the Nazis viewed as inferior or dangerous or inconvenient. Much of this audiobook — like the second volume — is harrowing to listen to. I felt numbed by the narration of number after number after number of the victims of Nazi persecution. I felt that I had to distance myself emotionally if I was going to make it through the whole 35 hours. But I am now much better informed about what actually happened during the Third Reich — so much more evil than any other book or video has ever revealed. It truly does stagger and baffle the mind to comprehend how ordinary people could be willing to act so despicably towards others. The whole story reminds me of the description of humanity in Genesis 6 where the Lord is sorry that He created mankind because “the thoughts of their hearts are only evil continually.” As my title says, this is a challenging listen, but if you want a better understanding of what the Third Reich was and did, it is worth the effort to listen to all three volumes.

A story of almost unrelieved conscienceless evil

Unlike the first volume of the trilogy, which is mostly a story of events, this second audiobook is a history of the almost unmitigated evil intentions, beliefs and behaviors of the Nazis — both leaders and followers — from Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor of Germany in January 1933 to the start of World War II in September 1939. The 32 hour narrative begins with the Night of the Long Knives and then goes on for several hours with the details of the travesty of the Nazi “justice” system that was a long repetition of cruelty and criminality that left me feeling battered and incredulous that any people could have been so totally without conscience and so given over to violence and hatred. The narrative continues through the Nazis takeover or attempted takeover of nearly every aspect of daily life and social institutions and relationships in just seven years. It’s a chilling, unbelievable story of an endless capacity for evil which must be believed because it happened.

I was amazed at all the details of both the context and the immediate actions that made up the background and the story of the rise of Hitler and the Nazis that I have never heard before. I was particularly struck by how much the SA was involved in violence at every step in the process. I am really looking forward to the remaining two volumes in this highly informative trilogy!
