Story
Frank, funny and open-hearted, You Never Know is an intimate memoir from one of the most beloved actors of our time, the highly personal story of a remarkable life and thoroughly accidental career. In his own voice and uniquely unpretentious style, the famed actor brings listeners on his uncharted but serendipitous journey to the top in Hollywood, his temptations and distractions, his misfires and mistakes and, over time, his well-earned success.

I was always a fan of blue bloods and Frank Reagan. This book showed in so many ways that Frank and Tom are one and the same. Both are good men, Tom brought himself, his philosophy of life, his beliefs, and determination to do the right thing into the character. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and recommended it to my Book Club.

Darby Thorne is a college student stranded by a blizzard at a highway rest stop in the middle of nowhere. She’s on the way home to see her sick mother. She’ll have to spend the night in the rest stop with four complete strangers. Then she stumbles across a little girl locked inside one of their parked cars. There is no cell phone reception, no telephone, no way out because of the snow, and she doesn’t know which one of the other travelers is the kidnapper.

What a great story! There were plenty of twists in the pot that I never anticipated. The ending was a little confusing. I ended up having to Google the title to figure it all out. But it was worth it. I highly recommend this book.

Story
The Vagabonds is “a portrait of America’s burgeoning love affair with the automobile” (NPR) but it also sheds light on the important relationship between the older Edison and the younger Ford, who once worked for the famous inventor. The road trips made the automobile ubiquitous and magnified Ford’s reputation, even as Edison’s diminished. The automobile would transform the American landscape, the American economy, and the American way of life and Guinn brings this seminal moment in history to vivid life.

Growing up in Dearborn, Michigan, I thought I knew a lot about Henry Ford. This book showed me how much more there was to learn about him and the delightful Thomas Edison. My book club read this book. And since we all still live in Michigan, we made a road trip to the Henry Ford museum to see the vagabonds display. I highly recommend this book.

Too much swearing
Reviewed: 10-23-17
The story was very good but the pauses between the chapters were too long. I find myself constantly checking to see if the recording had stopped. Also there was too much swearing. I listen to my audiobooks in the car. After getting several dirty looks, I learned I had to keep my windows up while listening to the story.

With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

The story of Maya Angelou’s extraordinary life has been chronicled in her multiple best-selling autobiographies. But now, at last, the legendary author shares the deepest personal story of her life: her relationship with her mother. For the first time, Angelou reveals the triumphs and struggles of being the daughter of Vivian Baxter, an indomitable spirit whose petite size belied her larger-than-life presence - a presence absent during much of Angelou’s early life.

Too choppy

What disappointed you about Mom & Me & Mom?
This was like bits and pieces of lectures that someone told her to put into book format. I moderate a Biography/Memoir book club and found I had to do a fair amount of research in order to piece together the stories offered in this book. Also, after listening to several videos where Maya performed several of her poems, I thought the audio version of the book would be better than the text version. Not true. She read in quite a monotone. I left the audio version and finished the book on my Kindle. I would not recommend this book unless you have already read all of her other books and read the Wikipedia version of her biography. It's worth the effort. I'm glad I finished it. But she could have done a much better job of pulling the stories together.
How could the performance have been better?
It was read in a monotone. Put some feeling into it.
What character would you cut from Mom & Me & Mom?
I would cut the brother. She left out too much about him. When she mentioned that he had a drug problem, it was a total surprise. I had to do separate research to figure out how he got from a wonderful brother to a druggie.
