Story
In over forty books, in a career that spanned over sixty years, Larry McMurtry staked his claim as a superior chronicler of the American West, and as the Great Plains’ keenest witness since Willa Cather and Wallace Stegner. Larry McMurtry: A Life traces his origins as one of the last American writers who had direct contact with this country’s pioneer traditions. It follows his astonishing career as bestselling novelist, Pulitzer-Prize winner, author of the beloved Lonesome Dove, Academy-Award winning screenwriter, public intellectual, and passionate bookseller.

What a fabulous book! Larry McMurtry had an intriguing personality. The author explained him so well. The book was so well written. I’ve gone back and watched two of his films and have another one on the docket. I can’t believe how much I loved it.

What an interesting twist on a World War II story. The writing was beautiful. The performance was wonderful. It’s a piece of literature. Not only did the author portray the awful times during World War II but she weaved repercussions in the narrative that most books do not do. I have recommended it to many of my friends.

Story
With nearly a century of life behind her, Stella Levi had never before spoken in detail about her past. Then she met Michael Frank. He came to her Greenwich Village apartment one Saturday afternoon to ask her a question about the Juderia, the neighborhood in Rhodes where she’d grown up in a Jewish community that had thrived there for half a millennium. Probing and courageous, candid and sly, Stella is a modern-day Scheherazade whose stories reveal what it was like to grow up in an extraordinary place in an extraordinary time—and to construct a life after that place has vanished.

A book so touching, calm, peaceful, upsetting. What a beautifully told horrific story! Thank you for a such a different view of the Rhodes I thought I knew. I must revisit to learn more. I know this must sound trite, but I thank you both for sharing.

Jared Kushner was one of the most consequential presidential advisers in modern history. For the first time, he recounts what happened behind closed doors during the Trump presidency. Few White House advisors have had such an expansive portfolio or constant access to the president. From his office next to Trump, senior adviser Jared Kushner operated quietly behind the scenes, preferring to leave the turf wars and television sparring to others.

That comes to mind when I think of this book is stupid. BUT I do realize how well written it is, and I so appreciate the allusions to literature and mythology. I did finish it because I wanted to see if it would redeem itself. Alas, no. I really loved his two previous books. Not this one.
