Story
Once the Church of God Awaiting dominated all the kingdoms of Safehold. Then, after centuries of stasis, the island kingdom of Charis began to defy the edicts of Mother Church—egged on, some say, by the mysterious warrior-monk Merlin Athrawes, who enjoys the Charisian royal family's absolute trust. What vanishingly few people know is that Merlin is the cybernetic avatar of a young woman a thousand years dead, felled in the war in which aliens destroyed Earth...and that since awakening, his task has been to restart the history of the long-hidden human race.

As quite a few people have said: the narrator is bad. You'll be correcting his pronunciation throughout the entire book, find his vocal range to be lacking, and scratching your head as to his lack of emotional inflection.
Otherwise the story is good.

Story
Agent Raibert Kaminski and the crew of the Transtemporal Vehicle Kleio have stumbled across a temporal implosion that has claimed two whole universes, and neither Raibert nor his crew can figure out what caused this calamity, or how to stop its spread. Meanwhile, old colleagues of Raibert’s from the Antiquities Rescue Trust, together with a version of Samuel Pepys transplanted from the 17th century into the 30th, have proposed an expedition into the past. The goal? To branch the timeline by preventing the Plague of Justinian, one of the worst pandemics in human history.

Narrator Choice Ultimately Ruined It
Reviewed: 06-07-21
Well, outside of the religious nonsense that David Weber likes to inject in to his books (to each their own, but it gets old), I found parts of this book kind of clichéd and predictable. That being said, I feel that a narrator with a broader vocal range would have improved my opinion of this book (and series). On several occasions during the book I found myself internally narrating a passage with a different inflection or intonation and found that the tone of a scene improved. It honestly felt like the narrator was just straight reading the book and gave little thought to the emotion of the passage he was reading.
I will freely admit that the time travel and alternate time-line aspects were enjoyable. Multi-verse books can be a lot of fun. That being said, I had to give it a rest about 3/4ths of the way through. At this point I may or may not finish it.

Story
As always, Reacher has no particular place to go, and all the time in the world to get there. One morning he ends up in a town near Pleasantville, Tennessee. But there’s nothing pleasant about the place. In broad daylight Reacher spots a hapless soul walking into an ambush. “It was four against one” . . . so Reacher intervenes, with his own trademark brand of conflict resolution. The man he saves is Rusty Rutherford, an unassuming IT manager, recently fired after a cyberattack locked up the town’s data, records, information . . . and secrets.

Story
Doctor Benjamin Schröder was far from a man of action. In fact, he was a history teacher - chairman of the Castle Rock University history department - and if his life wasn't perfect, it was close. Until, that is the discussion of his star student Elzbietá Abramowski's dissertation on Operation Oz, the Pacific Allies' invasion of Vladivostok, was brutally interrupted. The psychotic episode that turned his entire world upside down struck with absolutely no warning, and it was more terrifying than anything he should have been able to imagine.

Narrator's tone kept knocking me out of the story.

As stated, I kept finding myself retelling portions of the story in a different tone or cadence and found certain portions had become more dramatic, humorous, touching, etc.. I feel that this book would've been better if I had sat down to read it rather than listen to it.

Anti-Twilight I guess

Get this one out of your head: narrator's voice sounds similar to Nicholas Cage, but not with Cage's cadence, thank God. Even though I realize there is none but Nicholas Cage, this narrator did not have the range to handle the characters in this(these) novel(s). I also felt as though he took the wrong tone during parts of the book(s). I found myself replaying certain parts with a different delivery in my head and found that it changed the tone of the story.
The books themselves seem a tad shallow, the language crude, and the humor simplistic. Additionally the author was trying too hard to be funny and tried disguising the shortcomings of the humor with vulgarity. I am by no means a prude, I curse everyday when it seems called for, but I know what cursing for the sake of cursing sounds like. That being said, I can appreciate those who can curse fluently and creatively; to do so is difficult because a true master will use a thesaurus, rhyming dictionary and an urban dictionary to achieve the desired result. Simply repeating "b****" or dropping the many variations of an f-bomb (as this author did) is not humorous.
The plot and storyline I'll give him a pass on, but again he could've gone a little more in depth with the backstory and character development.

Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. This book just felt like it could've been so much better. I found myself saying "that's it?" frequently during the book, like certain plot points and characters hadn't been fleshed out enough.
Also, if you're a fan of military Sci-fi then you'll have a difficult time with this book. I'll acknowledge that this is a work of fiction, but I had a difficult time accepting the "you're a military officer based on a gamer score" aspect.
I would've passed on purchasing this book had I known the story was so lite.

The premise is interesting but the story-telling needs a bit more polish. Additionally this not a standalone novel, leaving aside the obvious fact that the protagonist will survive until the last book, it seemed as though the author was trying too hard to prep the sequel.
For a freshman attempt, I was not completely unhappy. Honesty compels me to say that I will get the next book in the series to see if his sophmore effort has more to it.
The narrator leaves a bit to be desired as well. A young man does need to narrate this, but perhaps someone without the slight lisp.

People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

Got an hour into it and gave up. The plot seemed decent but the writing style just did not flow very well and the narrator exacerbated this.
I was hoping for humor in horror but all I got was irritated.
