One of the most thought provoking and belief-challenging books I’ve ever listened to.

I’ll admit was a little bit skeptical. We’ve all heard the anecdotal cliches about thoughts and attitudes affecting our behavior and our lives. This book is entirely based around clinical studies, which demonstrate over and over again, the significant impact our expectations have all aspects of our lives, including physiological processes (like metabolism and aging) that I previously thought of as more or less determined by genetics and physical factors only. Without a doubt, the most interesting and “belief-challenging” book I’ve read on mind and body.

More useful than 6 months of Duolingo

I recently went to Italy after 6 months of daily practice on Duolingo (not slouching either- I’m in the top 2% on the platform) and found myself unprepared for most basic exchanges.
I think the moment I realized I needed a better tool was when I found myself in a cafe, pointing at a sandwich in a case but unable to say “I’d like that one” in Italian.
So I turned to audible and I’m glad I did.
I’ve made more progress towards becoming conversational with this course than I did in the previous 6-9 months.
Paul’s teaching style is very easy to follow: rather than rote memorization of hundreds of words, he drops etymological bombs that add many words to your vocabulary instantly. For example, almost every word in English which ends in “ation” (Latin root), simply changes the end to “are” in Italian—that’s 1,200+ words. :head_exploding_emoji:
I also particularly like his use of having a native Italian speaking woman answer the questions which he’s asking you, after a short pause.
I shouldn’t totally discount Duolingo- I’m sure the 6 months I did (and I continue to use it) helped prepare me for this course to some extent- but if I had to choose one, I’d choose this course, without question. Kind of mind blowing that it only cost a single book credit on Audible. Can’t recommend enough.

A firehouse of practical advice for growing businesses

My biggest problem with this audiobook is the shear volume of practical, actionable advice and information contained. I found myself rewinding frequently, and wishing that I was taking notes while listening. There are also many tables and diagrams referenced. Glad I listened first, but only considering the listen an overview: Ordered the paperback for a more in-depth read and reference material.

A more apt title would be: Executing in a Fortune 1000 Company

Almost entirely geared toward execution in large multi-departmental, multi-business-unit organizations. Centers around HR and personnel and organizational processes, to allow an organization to execute as a cohesive group.
Also a bit outdated, as most case references are from the 90’s, but still holds up; Again, if you’re looking to improve execution within a large organization.

Not sure about the content, because the narration is completely unlistenable. Like they tried using inexpensive text-to-voice software.

Gets better after the initial self-aggrandizing

Almost couldn’t handle the initial self-aggrandizing and the intensity of the narrators (the effect of which is amplified by listening at 1.25x), but after you get used to the the narrators and past the first couple chapters, the stories take over and the applications to business after each of those is practical.

Excellent foundation for the study of management

As a long time business owner recently concerning myself more with the formal study of management, this book is not as hands-on practical as others I have read on the subject, including Drucker’s first, The Effective Executive—But if you’re of the school of thought that a broad, historical and general survey of a topic is the best foundation for further practical study, it’s hard to imagine a better option on which to build that foundation.
