Story
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. This was was good also, but not as good as the first two. I loved hearing how Kingsbridge evolved into the place it became in the first 2 books (this is the prequel to the first two). I also really loved this narrator.

What a great story! Being from the US, I know little about the history black peoples in Europe and the tens of millions of Africans that were killed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the Congo region. It is a part of history that is never told in my country and may even include parts of my own story since the largest part of my DNA makeup is from that region. I am so glad I got to take this journey and highly recommend this book.

I absolutely love this author, but this was my least favorite of hers. Yes, it’s well written, but as a 57yr old woman I found so much of it to be ridiculous. I think it’s a very good book for someone in their 20s maybe, but it just wasn’t for me.

Painful to listen to. One of the worst audio recordings I’ve ever heard. Every character seems to have some version of a bad Irish accent. I couldn’t wait to get through it, and actually bought the ebook just so I didn’t have to be tortured all the time.

Story
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Brilliant and difficult to read
Reviewed: 04-27-22
This book will stay with me for years to come. The author’s intertwinement of fact and fiction is beautifully displayed in the telling of this work. I found myself in utter fear for the experiences of the characters, intense anger at the way slaves were treated, and deeply inspired by their strength and resilience. I have read many books this year, and so far, this one is my favorite, and the only one for which I have written a review. So, put on your “big girl” panties, grab a box of tissue, and hold on tight.

Good book. Poor choice for narration.

Like most of KH’s novels, I enjoyed this book. I had an issue with the narration, though. The voice of the narrator seemed much older than the main character, and I had a problem visualizing the character as a 30 something. I thought I would get over this as I listened, but discovered it was a bigger issue for me the longer I listened. Also, when another character entered the scene, he was supposed to have a New Orleans accent, but it sounded like a mixed of German and something else…definitely not New Orleans. Overall, I enjoyed the story and KH always brings it together beautifully at the end. It was worth the listen.

This was one of my favorite listens. Schwab is a beautiful writer. Her descriptions of the various settings were so beautifully vivid. I really appreciated the jumps in time periods and how the author would place little nuggets in them, only to be discovered later. This book read like an adult, novel length fairy tale...and who doesn't love a great fairy tale?
