Story
The missing don't always want to be found. Kate Harlow recognizes this painful truth, even as she keeps searching for her daughter, Sophie, who disappeared two years ago. The police have stopped investigating - after all, Sophie has sent postcards home, insisting that she's fine. Then one evening, as she volunteers at a charity helpline for missing teens, a call comes in from a voice Kate instinctively recognizes, even through bursts of static and beyond the sudden dial tone that breaks their connection. Those closest to Kate worry she's cracking under her grief....

Very good story especially once they introduce Sophie’s side of things. Had my anxiety peaked. I have to say the main character Kate was outrageous though lol she was so demanding anytime she talked to anyone you would have thought that she was the police. I have listened to police procedural’s where the DIs had more patience than she did questioning people.

Story
It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air.... Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one. All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

Story
Running from a devastating relationship that almost cost her everything, Maddy Hart impulsively accepts a job as a live-in caretaker at imposing Lakeview House. She has no memories of having visited the crumbling mansion on the banks of Lake Thirlmere before, but when she arrives, something about the house feels familiar. The more time Maddy spends in the house, the more unsettled she feels. By day, she clears out the dusty rooms, but in the dead of night, it’s hard to explain away the eerie noises or crackly radio she hears hours after she turned it off.

Disappointing at best

All of the negative reviews are accurate. There is zero character development. And a lack of any description that would help you picture the scenes. All that you know about Lakeview house is that it is a big house. Poorly written I felt like the sentences were on repeat and various spots in the story the same things were said over and over again. And the descriptions were juvenile. Everything was amazing. The men were amazing. The women were amazing being in relationships with these people were amazing and Even though this was supposed to be suspenseful, it was a Snoozefest. If anything, it could possibly be categorized as a comedy because the actions of the characters were almost hilarious. Woman gets the daylights beat out of her by one man two days later she is telling another man that she loves him that only a few days before she refused to even date. I have read other books from this author and thought I would enjoy this. I do not and honestly it kind of put me off on trying any more of her books.

This book is terrible. Which is heartbreaking because I’ve binged the DC smith series and was eager to read more. As any of the other reviews states, the characters are very under developed. Completely uninteresting story line which is odd because it is a five hour car chase. I only made it three hours into the story and then I realized that it was playing but I had already zoned out and was barely listening. The narrator is awful. Monotone and incapable of capturing the voice and personality of multiple characters.

these are some of my favorite books. I love how the investigate more than one crime in each book and I also love how unique and twisted these cases are. I also appreciate that in the end it's never a happy ending. there is so much that happens. And the narrator I feel there should be some award for his performance he does each character so well I forget that I am listening to one man read a book.

How is this not become a movie yet? this book is amazing The best story I have listened to ever! It may be my favorite book. And if it was ever made into a movie it would be my favorite movie. there were several places that I actually got cold chills listening to it. And a couple where my eyes started tearing up. The narrator was fabulous. she brought the story to life. I finished this book in one sitting. I could not stop listening. It has everything cheating, secrets, extortion, kidnapping... I will definitely be trying another book written by Jennifer Hillier.

Reviewed: 08-10-21
I was not really impressed with this book. First of all I was under the assumption that I was listening to a mystery thriller. That is not what this book is. It reads like a romance novel sprinkled with murders that you know are happening but not much is really said about it. The main focus is on the attraction of the main character and an FBI agent. which if you are like me and you cannot stand listening to romance novels you will hate because it is very do or die soulmate kind of stuff. also the main character Genevieve may possibly be the most annoying character I have ever read in the book. I like my leading ladies to be powerhouses and she was more like Snow White. soft and gentle and she speaks to animals! I wasn't a huge fan of the writing. phrases and expressions were repeated multiple times to where I found myself knowing exactly what the next words in the book would be before they were spoken. The only reason I finished this book is because I wanted to see if I was Right about who I suspected to be the killer... I was right. which is not a positive I guessed who it was going to be halfway through the book. so I felt like that was very predictable. for someone who's interest include mysteries, thrillers, detective novels, and horror novels this is absolutely not for you.

this story was so hard to follow. there was multiple characters multiple storylines that felt like they weren't going anywhere or didn't have anything to do with the others. The book didn't really give you someone to root for. DI Kelly Porter was the main storyline and you should have been invested in her character but I didn't really care about any of the characters or even the crime itself. I had already used one of my credits to purchase the second book because I love detective novels but I will definitely be returning it because I am not a fan.
