About this listen

Winner, Earphones Award 2020

Five long-missing children are about to be returned.

It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air....

Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one.

All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

Speculation grows that the mysterious abductor is enacting a cruel revenge plot due to a murderer that Kate put in jail years before.

Kate isn't sure what to believe. But one thing is certain - she's about to begin the battle of her life. When the children were first stolen, she was prevented from investigating the case.

But now, Kate will be relentless in uncovering the identity of the abductor and discovering what happened to Ivy.

Decent story racist narration

The story line was decent and will keep you wondering who did it so that’s good it’s not predictable. I prefer long books so I’m not finished quickly and searching for another and this was long but felt dragged out at times. HOWEVER the narration for the Asian and African American was extremely offensive…the voice used was a stereotypical of Asian and African American and does not depict a true dialect for either…why does an Asian voice have to be in broken English and the African American like it’s the 1930’s. The storyline decent…the narration OFFENSIVE.

Great story line

I’ve never read anything like this and that’s what drew me to the book. I was intrigued to know why the children were returned! I gave it 4 stars…I thought there was some over-explaining and some details that just made some parts drag on, but it was a good book. Sometimes the main character’s personality annoyed me…lol, but that’s real life right? Overall-a good read

Great Story

A detective that is a woman in her sixties who is fit and is NOT a Miss Marple type? Yes! Having most of the leadership positions filled by strong women? Yes! A very original mystery story that has the reader guessing to the very end? Yes! Throw in big floofy white dogs as a main clue and you have a winner of a story. This is an exceptionally good mystery story. Greatly recommend

Love the author

This is my second book by Anni Taylor and I an very much a fan! though the story wasn't very plausible with everyone else failing to solve one crime, and this one detective solved many, but I read to escape reality. The main downfall was the narrators accents. They were so bad it was comical but that's OK. still a great book

Shocking turn off Events

Excellent storyline. I was hooked from the beginning. I certainly didn’t guess “who” until Detective Kate said the name. Wow!

Long book

Story had a few parts that were not needed. Narrator’s voice is hard to like or get used to.

Finally..

… a truly great story. Lots to think about when it comes to Mothers and their Daughters.

Thank you!

I really enjoyed it

Although the story could be classified for me as science fiction (meaning that’s something so difficult that it can happen, it kept me interested all the time. My native language is Spanish, so it’s important for me the performance and in this case no complaints at all.
