Story
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Horrible Narration
Reviewed: 05-23-22
I really like Michael Lewis but I just am not able to get past the grating narration! Breathy voice, annoying cadence and intonation. Bad casting! I want to return this. I will probably get a digital version to read.

Story
The Arab Spring promised to end dictatorship and bring self-government to people across the Middle East. Yet everywhere except Tunisia it led to either renewed dictatorship, civil war, extremist terror, or all three. In The Arab Winter, Noah Feldman argues that the Arab Spring was nevertheless not an unmitigated failure, much less an inevitable one. Rather, it was a noble, tragic series of events in which, for the first time in recent Middle Eastern history, Arabic-speaking peoples took free, collective political action as they sought to achieve self-determination.

Excellently researched and written

Mr. Feldman has deep understanding of the subject, the historical background and nuances of the countries and region. I don’t agree with all of his analysis or conclusions but do agree with his central themes of local agency and responsibility, and that the tragedy lies in that the unfortunate outcomes of the respective arab springs need not have been so and were not inevitable. Excellent book. Highly recommended for anyone interested in this topic.

Story
When you think about Christian history, you might think of the first thousand years - the events of Jesus' life, the acts of the apostles, the establishment of the church, and the various councils that established theological doctrine. But the history of Christianity from the Reformation to the present is equally dramatic and profoundly relevant. It's a story about people as much as theology - our cultures, our politics, our relationship to the world.

Too much and not enough
Reviewed: 06-26-19
For an introductory it series gets into too much detail in some aspects such as minutia of Jewish practices in biblical and medieval times and completely leaves out other aspects such Mizrahi Judaism which he makes no mention of.
I wish this series had much more Jewish history and a lot less about liturgy and practice. Leaves important aspects and questions not covered.

This should be required study in all high schools and colleges. Thank you for teaching me so much, explaining things I felt but couldn’t explain and for a great “read”.
