Story
In Beyond Happiness, Bayda draws on Zen teachings to question our conventional notions about what happiness is and where we can find it. Most of us seek happiness in things that are external to us. We imagine that getting more money, a better relationship, or going on a nice vacation will finally make us happy. But Bayda shows us that the deepest and most lasting form of happiness does not rely on external circumstance at all.

One of the best books on this topic
Reviewed: 01-26-25
This book was probably the single most helpful books on being happy/content that I have ever read. It is so deeply human and simple in its messages. I also love the jokes the author sometimes uses to illustrate various points - really lighthearted and funny. I am so happy I stumbled upon it.
I am not doing it justice in my review as it's hard to put into words exactly why it had such impact, so let me just say - if being content, calm, happy etc.is something you struggle with and you feel overwhelmed with the plethora of self-help "how to get happiness quickly" types of books, rather, give this book a try.

Awesome shorter book
Reviewed: 09-16-24
I typically don't like these shorter, x.5 books very much, as I prefer the long books with characters I know. Yet the preview of the main character of this book in the previous interludes and the story here made me like this book the most of all the books of this saga, apart from perhaps the first one. Well worth the read!

Excellent narrator and realistic characters
Reviewed: 04-06-24
I love the fact that the characters were very real. There are often things that movies and books skip over but real people would typically have to worry about and I find like I was thinking "Finally someone acknowledges this!" anytime the characters had to deal with some of the less elegant yet very human problems.
On top of that, the narrator was absolutely excellent.

Gretch Wolgast is a bit of a dud. Just ask her. She’s a 21-year-old college dropout who has a loser job at the mall. Sure, she can lift a tennis ball with her telekinetic powers. But only three feet in the air. And she has to be sitting. Gretch is an OP, one of thousands born in Orlando, Florida, in the early 1980s who mysteriously developed the ability to move things with their minds. Unfortunately, she turned out to be the weakest of the bunch. Now, Gretch’s life is being turned upside down. She witnesses a murder and discovers a wide-ranging conspiracy.

Story
More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

Reviewed: 04-23-23
I really love the setting and the story and I think the author writes really well (no unnecessary long-winded descriptions etc.).
The only downside is that it felt so cliche, with the main character being the best at his job and all about his duty but also soured to relationships etc.etc. - I don't know, it feels like these kind of characters were popular 40 years ago... That really made it harder to relate, but other than that, I appreciated the other aspects of the book.

Highlights:
Characters (deep, relatable, funny, human), story (interesting and not forced), setting (relatable despite being a fantasy world).
I am a big fan of Adrian Tchaikovsky, also loved Wheel of Time, Game of Thrones etc. I am now adding JA Andrews to the list of my favourite authors 😊
