Story
It’s Drop Night, the one night every decade when the gods hand out cards to a lucky few. If you get a deck, you’re a deckbearer capable of wondrous feats within the Great Game system. You can control powerful monsters and summon mantles that let you fight alongside your beasts. Ethan Wolfe, top enforcer for the Grimm family mob, has already been overlooked on two previous Drop Nights. People of his ilk seldom receive cards, as the gods tend to favor people who follow their divine mandates, but that doesn’t mean Wolfe can’t hope.

A grown up story darker with compelling characters and a great plot. I am a little shocked given the genre. The magic system (cards) were seamlessly woven into the story. The stats were infrequent enough not to be burdensome. I finished the book in nearly one go.

It SHOULD have been great… AGH!
Reviewed: 08-19-21
I love the author. For the genre I find the writing style, plot detail, and use of language is refreshing. I loved the first book. I wanted to love this book…
I just could not get over the instant love interest. It made me cringe every moment they were together. I met you!…I love you!… We are family!… I will save your whole race! …All in a few days? It so extremely distractingly implausible and thin that I had to pause the book at multiple instances. This whole book could have happened with that plot thread taken out and it would have captured me just like the first one did. What is more he had decently in depth and complex relationships/interactions with most of the characters we meet. AGH!
I am going to choose to pretend it was taken out and not tank my review. I still highly recommend the book to anyone just selectively skip ahead. I will continue with the series.

Morgan used to be a pretty normal guy. He went to college by day and played online games by night, leading his guild into new conquests - until he got hit by a car and a dude wearing a wet suit appeared in front of him. The man offered him a new chance at life in a world he had created, a world with similar rules to the games Morgan loved to play. There is the promise of great rewards and power, he says, if Morgan manages to complete the Tower of Power.

Awesome series with useless romances forced in.
Reviewed: 08-07-19
I absolutely love this series! However, there is one thing that has been persistently nagging at me. The author’s INSANE hang up on forcing every one of his main characters into a seemingly useless and irrelevant romantic relationship. It doesn’t fit with the rest of his otherwise stellar narratives, and they could easily be completely omitted from the series without changing the plot. None of the relationships are ever properly built up or given a purpose. They just get dropping into the story without warning or purpose, and generally violate the development of each character or situation.
One of the apprentices is a great example. Some 14 year old girl just shows up and decides to marry him on the spot, and he’s immediately OK with it? Huh, what? Mind boggling.
Some plump little peasant girl with no education is magically able to charm Min and become a baroness, and THEN get accepted by the nobly bred peerage? Lol, ok. Aliaya is the worst, and entirely meaningless to Min’s character and the narrative as a whole, despite the author’s repeated insistence otherwise. She’s an entirely and completely worthless character. An irritating distraction from the otherwise amazing story telling.
Pentandra’s was the most reasonable, and it was entirely based on Arborn being tall, silent and handsome. However, it completely abridged everything her character was built upon, strong, intelligent, independent and highly refined femininity and sexuality. Now her character is reduced to having the primary achievement in her life being to pop out a few kids. Ruined that one.
It’s just bad writing. There is no reason to have them in the tale. This series is absolutely spectacular otherwise. Great character development, excellent plot building, and taken in fantastic directions.

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

This story is Grimdark at its best. I wasn't sure who or what this was about at first, but the summary drew me in. It turned out to be one of the best books I've read in the genre. A character rich story, and raw grit similar to Abercrombie's writing. I can't wait for the next installment to be released.
