A good story, a lot of preaching

Excellent audiobook. Fun story that gets lost in the author’s preachiness. Half way through and the author has blamed capitalism for basically all the world’s problems…tiresome.

Good story and journalism but totally annoying to be constantly interrupted by a zillion ads. Obnoxious.

What would have made Allegiant better?

The main problems with this book have been expressed before, but I'll make a short list:-characters not well developed or consistent or believable-the whole idea of the factions is just silly and does not follow human behavior. The behavior of the faction members was often nonsensical.-Tris is unlikable - juvenile, self-indulged, snarky. By the end I didn't care what happened to any of them, especially Tris. The writing was choppy, and I never felt the flow of it.Sometimes I found myself just laughing out loud at how ridiculous some of it was.Sigh. If so many say these books are good, I'm worried about our future generations...

Would you ever listen to anything by Veronica Roth again?

Nope. She's already made way to much on this crap excuse for a book.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

It was like listening to an over-indulged, spoiled teenager. Honestly annoying.

Any additional comments?

I'm seriously regretting having used my credits on these books. Waste of my time and money. Oh well.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I would start by adding depth to the story and characters. I found it very unbelievable. Over and over I found myself saying, "that's not a human would have responded to that!" The constant bickering and arguing between Tris and the other characters just seemed really contrived and forced; it really started to grate on my nerves by the middle of the book. The characters are surrounded by death and tragedy, and they respond by acting like they are in middle school recess??? Snide comments, boyfriend issues? Really? We're at war, we witnessed both parents being shot, and we're playing kissy face with boyfriends? I'm sorry, it's just not real, not by a long shot. Kind of an interesting storyline, but it could have been done WAY more effectively. I definitely liked the first book much better.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Emma Galvin?

The narrator was probably half of the problem, she sounded really young, and definitely added to the middle school agnst feel.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Annoyance, anger at some of the evil characters. In the end, I just really don't like Tris, and that is problematic.

Which character – as performed by Robert Glenister – was your favorite?

I enjoyed Cormoran's character - he was the one that was slightly more than 2-dimensional. He had ups and downs, and I felt some tension between him and his ex-girlfriend.

Do you think The Cuckoo's Calling needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Initially I would have said no, but after a few days thought, I think the characters have the potential of filling out in a good sequel.

Any additional comments?

I think what's missing from the book is the development of the story in some way other than pure dialogue. It felt like the entire story takes place at a desk in Cormoran's office. I needed the story to take me somewhere, and it didn't. That being said, Rowling is a very good writer, very nice prose without feeling overly wordy. I did enjoy the metaphors and visual descriptions. Even the storyline is fairly interesting, but the execution is lacking and it just didn't pull me in. I wouldn't really recommend this book to anyone without telling them first that there are probably better choices out there.
