About this listen

One choice can transform you - or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves - and herself - while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable - and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian Divergent series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

Decent but not as interesting as Divergent

Insurgent picks up right where Divergent left off and provides more insight into the factions and the dystopian society in which they exist. This time around Amity and Erudite are revealed in more detail and I found that to be the better part of the book. Each faction has a unique flavor and viewpoint of the overall society and the relationship between them all keeps things interesting.

I can't say the same for the relationship between Tris and Four. Their back and forth relationship is just not that interesting and Tris herself is a far weaker character this time around. Her constant self-doubt becomes tiring and Roth could have cut out a good 30+ minutes of repetition and it wouldn't really have changed the fundamental story at all.

This book sets up and delivers a big reveal at the end that points to a finale that will likely be very different from where the series started. That could either be a good thing or cause the series to "jump the shark." Based on the reviews I see for book 3, and from what I have heard from my friends, the latter seems to be the case.

So pick this one up at your own risk; it is a solid story but not quite as good as book one. The biggest downside to book two is that it leaves you facing a tough call when it comes to book three. For myself, I will listen to Allegiant at some point but I'm not enthusiastic enough about it to do so right now.

Even better that than the first book Divergent!

I absolutely loved it! I finished it in 3 days. I think Emma Galvin is a fantastic reader and she makes it very worthwhile. I can't wait for the next book! Veronica Roth is definitely a gifted writer!

Read Divergent and then get this immediately

Insurgent is book two of the Divergent series. It starts almost immediately where it left off, in a dystopian world on the cusp of revolution.

I loved Divergent and Insurgent did not disappoint. Emma Galvin narrates in a heartfelt, believable way. She is able to convey the aspects of Trice that are overly mature as well as less mature. The characters are complex, the action is intense, and mysteries are slowly revealed. There is alway something new to experience when listening to this book. The third isn't out yet, so I now find myself twiddling my thumbs in anticipation.

Son of a Gun!

Where does Insurgent rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'm not sure because I had mixed feelings about this book. At points I hated it, but at some other points it took me by such surprise that I loved it again. And at the end, I just felt it was too short because I was yearning for more. But that's what books are all about - taking you to extremes, to the edges, and 'Insurgent' does that.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Insurgent?

When Johanna talks to Evelyn about how things can surprisingly turn around, and when Tobias realizes that Tris is right and forgives her. At that last moment I felt so relieved...

Which character – as performed by Emma Galvin – was your favorite?

Tobias.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

So many! And I mean in good and bad ways. One example was when Tris decided to do what Marcus told her, rather than going to battle with the Dauntless. I felt this was such a huge betrayal towards Tobias that I refused to listen to the audio book for like a day! (and I just continued because I wanted to hear the end of the story.

Any additional comments?

Veronica Roth leaves us dangling because when things are heating up again, and I make my peace with my feelings towards the book, I hear that book 3 will only come out in 2013!

I loved these books....Divergent and Insurgent.

What did you love best about Insurgent?

It was spellbinding for me. I listened to this because I have lots of Great Grand Children who are reading books I have never heard of so I want to see what they were reading. I think with my knowledge of life and my experieince I may have approached this book from a differeent perspective than the youngsters but I loved them both

What was one of the most memorable moments of Insurgent?

I don't know there were so many but I think the relationships of the people were outstanding both those that were positive and those that were negative

Have you listened to any of Emma Galvin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Diverfgent which is the first book of the series and I will listen to both books again before I read the third in the series which is a year off I understand.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

At first I wondered what the help my "tweenies and teenies" were reading. It had a slow start for me and I went back and listened to the first part of the first book twice so I could have a really good understanding of where she was going.

Any additional comments?

Just I would recommend these books whole heartedly

I loved it!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, not just the story is good, but the narrator makes it feel like the movie itself!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Insurgent?

All if them were memorable, but one of my favorite parts is when they are taking Tris out of the Erudite Headquarters, with Peter and Four. She was fantastic!

Have you listened to any of Emma Galvin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not, but I definitely will!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes. I was so into it, that I have not been able to finish the book, nor start the last one of the trilogy. I was crying like crazy, and it also made me laugh. But I could feel the anguish of the character.
