Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

Featured Article: Excellent Dystopian Listens Like The Hunger Games

The popularity of Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games trilogy and its film adaptations has paved the way for so many great dystopian books and series in YA, imagining harrowing worlds where teens must fight for survival and define what life means to them. The enduring popularity of the series has proven that dystopian stories and the sometimes-dark futures they imagine are endlessly fascinating to our imaginations.

Um....What? Are you kidding me? Betrayed!

Where does Allegiant rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I loved the first book and thought the second one was pretty good. I looked forward to the movie that was coming out. Then I listened this one. I thought Aaron did well stepping into the voice of Four and I did all right with the perspective jumping back and forth. But then we got to the.... I guess I'll call it the Big Plot Twist. I get that Roth wanted to be different and not follow convention, but I actually had to go back and listen to the Big Plot Twist again because I just couldn't believe that it was what it was. It soured the whole story for me, and I actually tend to like this sort of plot twists in many of my other books, but NOT in a YA fantasy and NOT from a first person narrator. I feel it violates actual writing convention and storytelling and immediately throws your reader out of the story. Honestly, I can only think that the producers of the movie Divergent found out about the Big Plot Twist and said, "Oh crap, there goes the franchise..." I might give Roth another try in the future, but I would certainly be a lot less trusting of her narrators....

I loved this series!

I loved and hated this book! it was a great read. Although I wished for an alternate ending. I hated the ending even though I cried and was pulled into the emotion of the story, I don't want to ruin anything for you who have not read it, but I will say well worth the credit.

disappointing end to the trilogy

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

so-so book-- after the first 2 volumes, which were performed in a way that enhanced the story, this is a less enticing follow up. 2 narrators- no. story also seems contrived.

Would you be willing to try another book from Veronica Roth? Why or why not?

maybe

Would you listen to another book narrated by Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ?

emma- yes; aaron, maybedid not work to have 2 narrators!!!

Do you think Allegiant needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

NO. let it be

Any additional comments?

I looked forward to this novel and was underwhelmed. almost gave it 2 stars rather than 3

Smart, engaging story and great performances!

What made the experience of listening to Allegiant the most enjoyable?

In the third book of the Divergent trilogy, Veronica Roth writes two narrators, Tris and Tobias. The performances of each were wonderful, and the different perspectives added emotional and psychological interest to the story.

What did you like best about this story?

I thought that the author's use of "experiments" and "gender pure" vs. "gender damaged" offered a clever metaphor for our own culture and society. In the experiments, knowledge is controlled as a way to manipulate behavior, and this reminds me of how our own culture presents information through media of all kinds, influencing the ways that we think and act. The Pure seemed to represent any group of people with privilege, while the Damaged stood for any group that the society of Pure/privileged people kept oppressed with policies, ideology, history, and cultural representations.

Have you listened to any of Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to Emma Galvin's Divergent books, same for Aaron Stanford, I've also hear Emma Galvin's performance in Good Kings, Bad Kings, where she played the role of a Latina teen in a wheelchair. Needless to say, she was awesome in all of these books. I think both performers did such a great job, I'll be excited to hear more from them.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I devoured it in two days.

Any additional comments?

I hope Veronica Roth has more to come, she is a smart, engaging, wonderful writer.

Brillant Trilogy ending

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to my friends because it's a phenomenal and realistic trilogy finale. Most trilogies have predictable endings.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Allegiant?

I feel i give it away if I explained.

What does Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I would've never have gotten the two narratives would've mixed em up completely.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I went through the trilogies in two weeks non stop.

Still sobbing

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, and I have. The Divergent series is amazing!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tobias, because it's Tobias.

What does Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It's always wonderful to have a male and female narrator for a book. It just gives the story so much more.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Omg are you kidding me? If you read it you would know while I'm still sobbing.

Any additional comments?

Omg the feels!!! Roth, you kicked me right in the feels!! I don't know if I wanna hug you or punch you right now! **sobs uncontrollably**

Great ending to a powerful story

Would you listen to Allegiant again? Why?

Yes, I loved this book. A lot of other reviewers didn't appreciate it but I loved it. It didn't have a happy ending but stuff happens, that's why it's called life. This as the perfect ending to this roller coaster ride. A dip at the end that you just didn't see coming!

Who was your favorite character and why?

My first thought was that I am torn between Trice and Tobias but actually, I think it might be Kara. Throughout the book she has been who she is, no pretense, just Kara. She accepts the good and the bad about herself where some of the other characters are not as self aware.

Have you listened to any of Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

What would you do if you found out that everything you thought you knew about life and the world was a lie?

Any additional comments?

Great book. Great series. Can't wait to see the movies. As good as the Hunger Games.

I suspect that I'll be in the minority.

What did you love best about Allegiant?

I love that the story was from the perspective of both Tris and Four. And Emma Galvin continued to knock it out of the park with her reading, while Aaron Stanford was also very good.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that it wasn't what I expected. And it wasn't what I wanted. It just was what it was and closed the story how Verionica Roth wanted to close the story. Deep down, it's about the smae sort of choices that were faced in the first two books.

What does Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think Emma Galvin MADE the first two audiobooks, and she was great here, too. Aaron Stanford was very good, but Ms. Galvin is great for this series.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The epilogue made me weepy.

Any additional comments?

I think that a lot of people aren't going to like the ending, because it's not what they expect or what they want or whatever. But I liked it.
