Story
Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

So Much More Than Expected!
Reviewed: 08-06-18
I thought going into this book that it was going to be historical fiction based on a true story about a short time period just directly surrounding the space race. I was surprised to find that it was non-fiction and just directly outlined the story of these women as it happened, but it was so well written that I was invested in it just like I would have been if it was a novel. The whole story was intriguing and I loved reading it. It also covered a lot longer of a timespan than I expected - going from World War II all the way through the space program. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who would like another perspective on this time period and the events surrounding the space program and the civil rights movement!

Like handshakes or housepets, many things are preferable when not slippery. Unfortunately, in this miserable volume, I am afraid that Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire run into more than their fair share of slipperiness during their harrowing journey up, and down, a range of strange and distressing mountains.

Story
The word "carnivorous", which appears in the title of this book, means "meat-eating", and once you have read such a bloodthirsty word, there is no reason to read any further. This carnivorous volume contains such a distressing story that consuming any of its contents would be far more stomach-turning than even the most imbalanced meal.

Set in the 1920s and 1930s, Honolulu explores the stark contrast between the image of the glamorous Hawaiian paradise portrayed to the mainland and the harsh reality of life on the island. With characters as vivid and richly descriptive as the history of Hawaii itself, this novel is sure to enthrall listeners.

Fantastic Vacation Read
Reviewed: 01-16-16
I purchased this book in preparation for a trip to Hawaii with my husband. It was perfect to get me in the mood for our trip as well as a great beach read. It was very interesting to get a taste of the history of the island of Oahu before visiting and definitely helped me to see the island and its people in a different light. I think the book was well researched and really gave me a view into a completely different world than my own. I would highly recommend it.

Too much of a stretch
Reviewed: 12-08-15
My husband and I listened to this book together but found some of the premise to be too much of a stretch for us to really enjoy it. It ended up feeling a little forced. Some of it was interesting and I'll probably end up finishing the series just because I hate to leave a series unfinished, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Story
The night winds were beginning their wild dances beyond the bar, and the fishing hamlet across the harbor was gemmed with lights as Anne and her husband, Gilbert, finally a doctor, drove up the poplar lane. The door of the little house opened, and a warm glow of firelight flickered out into the dusk. Gilbert lifted Anne from the buggy and led her into the garden, through the little gate, up the trim, red path to the sandstone step. "Welcome home," he whispered, and hand in hand they stepped over the threshold of their house of dreams...and the story begins.

Couldn't Listen to It
Reviewed: 07-21-15
I'm usually pretty patient but I only made it 40 seconds into this book before returning it for a refund. The sound quality was AWFUL. The narrator didn't seem terrible, but it sounded like it had been recorded in a tin can. I decided it was worth a little more money to get the version that Barbara Caruso narrates.
