Story
In Insecure in Love, you'll learn how to overcome attachment anxiety using compassionate self-awareness, a technique that can help you recognize your negative thoughts or unhealthy behavior patterns and respond to them in a nurturing way - rather than beating yourself up. You'll also learn how insecurity can negatively affect healthy dialog between you and your partner (or potential partners) and develop the skills needed to stop you from reverting back to old patterns of neediness and possessiveness.

Exceptional resource
Reviewed: 09-04-23
If you think you might have an insecure attachment style or you struggle in relationships, buy this book. Read it, do the exercises within, and apply it to your life, and I’m sure your life will change for the better. I am a therapist and I read at least a dozen mental health books yearly, including self-help books which I review for my clients. This book is exceptional in both its content and how the content is presented. Well-organized and concise, and delivered with compassion as well as expertise, you will find it a pleasure — not a task — to read Anxious in Love. Highly recommended.

Story
Pidgeon Pagonis always felt like their life was a constant attempt to fit in with other girls—a feeling that was only exacerbated when puberty failed to hit. They never understood why…until they uncovered the secret that had haunted their childhood. Bouncing between their Chicago home and the city’s children’s hospital, Pidgeon weathered a series of traumatic surgeries, fabrications, and misdirections. It wasn’t until college that Pidgeon pieced together the puzzle of their identity.

Great storytelling in addition to education
Reviewed: 08-17-23
Pidgeon Pagonis has beautifully written and performed this memoir which is both a personal narrative of their experiences growing up as an intersex person as well as an account of the activist efforts they played a key role in to successfully stop medically unnecessary and harmful surgeries on intersex infants and children at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. Entertaining and educational, I listened to the audiobook in only two days. Check it out!

Based on Dr. Bailey's more than 25 years of work with children, this book explains that how we discipline ourselves is ultimately how we discipline our children.

This book provides solid, practical guidance and is presented in a clear way with lots of examples on how to apply the guidelines with your own children, from toddlers through school-age children. It’s more than just information and tips - Dr. Bailey uses her expertise in child development and the psychology of children and adults to explain the rationale behind her guidance and assist parents to recognize and address their roadblocks to connecting with and effectively parenting their children. Read this book and Dr. Bailey will teach you a kinder, more compassionate — and more effective — way to treat your children, and yourself!

Story
In Unmasking Autism, Dr. Devon Price shares their personal experience with masking and blends history, social science research, prescriptions, and personal profiles to tell a story of neurodivergence that has thus far been dominated by those on the outside looking in. For Dr. Price and many others, Autism is a deep source of uniqueness and beauty. Unfortunately, living in a neurotypical world means it can also be a source of incredible alienation and pain.

A surprisingly quick read given the abundance of information provided, because Dr. Price presents the information in such an engaging way with lots of real life stories. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially someone who thinks they may be autistic or knows someone who is or may be autistic, or simply anyone who is interested in improving our world through positive social change. I am a psychotherapist and I’ve benefited through the increased awareness I’ve gained from this book, and I’ve already recommended this book to a client. Also read this book if you’ve experienced or heard of ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) - we can do better!

Story
Shadow Daughter tackles a subject we rarely discuss as a culture: Family estrangements, especially those between parents and adult children. Estrangements - between parents and children, siblings, multiple generations - are surprisingly common, and even families that aren't officially estranged often have some experience of deep conflicts. Estrangement is an issue that touches most people, one way or another, one that's still shrouded in secrecy, stigma, and shame.

In this book, which is both a very personal memoir and a journalistic piece, Harriet Brown bares her heart to us while also providing interesting research and illuminating examples of other people’s experiences with estrangement, and that which led to their estrangement. This book is a validating resource for someone who has had to make the difficult choice of estrangement. I would also recommend this book to therapists who wish to understand the topic better. The book is very well written and it was a pleasure to listen to the audiobook.

Excellent storytelling and some of the best narration on Audible. I’ll look for more books by both this author and the narrator. The only complaint I have is that another voice is heard softly in the background. I didn’t hear it the whole time but for the last hour or so it sounds like another man is speaking in the background and it’s an unwelcome distraction. If Audible Curran’s this up, this audiobook will be perfect.

Do not let Etgar Keret deceive you. The Israeli writer who's worked in film, illustration, animation, and radio, is a storyteller in all senses of the word. Like a conman, he'll promise you a simple story and then the next thing you know your emotional reserves have been completely emptied. It's a literary bait and switch, and he'll get you every time.
