Story
At the end of World War I, young C. S. Lewis was a devout atheist about to begin his studies at Oxford. In the three decades that followed, he would establish himself as one of the most influential writers and scholars of modern times, undergoing a radical conversion to Christianity that would transform his life and his work. Harry Lee Poe unfolds these watershed years in Lewis’s life, offering a unique perspective on his conversion, his friendships with Christians such as J. R. R. Tolkien, and his development from an opponent of Christianity to one of its most ardent defenders.

The armies of the Dark Lord are massing as his evil shadow spreads even wider. Men, Dwarves, Elves, and Ents unite forces to battle against the Dark. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam struggle further into Mordor in their heroic quest to destroy the One Ring. The devastating conclusion of J. R. R. A Triumphant Conclusion
Reviewed: 05-01-23
After listening to Serkis' narration of Books 1 and 2, I was even more awed by his work on Book 3. Serkis makes Tolkien's words come even more alive here in a way that can bring in even the most casual listener. The Battle of the Pelennor Fields is one highlight, though there are many more. If you only watched the movies, you're missing out on so much of the story! Thank you, Andy Serkis, for thoughtfully recording one of the greatest literary works of the 20th century.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

Another Knockout Serkis performance
Reviewed: 04-07-23
Gollum, of course, is well-represented by Andy Serkis. His thoughts, such as a great disdain for all things elvish, are more fully represented by Tolkien’s original text (as are Treebeard’s). I’ll agree that Serkis isn’t the best singer, but that only makes me want to read The Two Towers’ original poetry for myself.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion. Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

So much better than the movie!
Reviewed: 04-07-23
I knew nothing about The Lord of the Rings when the FOTR movie came out in 2001. Serkis’ recording of the text helps to flesh out details missing from the film, while his voices frequently bring to mind the actors in Peter Jackson’s movie. Serkis’ characterization of Tom Bombadil, who was absent from the film, is a special treat.

Story
When we seek an example of great leaders with unalloyed courage, the person who comes to mind is Winston Churchill: the iconic, visionary war leader immune from the consensus of the day, who stood firmly for his beliefs when everyone doubted him. But how did young Winston become Churchill? What gave him the strength to take on the superior force of Nazi Germany when bombs rained on London and so many others had caved? In this landmark biography of Winston Churchill based on extensive new material, the true genius of the man, statesman, and leader can finally be fully understood.

Great insights on a much-covered author
Reviewed: 01-01-23
I most appreciated the author’s literary insights into Lewis’ thinking. Also, the critiques of other Lewis biographies were quite helpful. However, I’m not sure why Professor Jacob’s left out so much of his original text of The Narnian. Perhaps this should be listed as an “abridged” version of the book?

Story
In this remarkable recording, C. S. Lewis shows why millions of readers have acclaimed him the greatest spokesman for Christianity in the 20th century. In a resonant, baritone voice, Lewis explores the nature of the four Greek words that are translated love in English: storge (affection), philia (friendship), eros (sexual or romantic love) and agape (selfless love).

"The central miracle asserted by Christians is the Incarnation. They say that God became Man. Every other miracle prepares the way for this, or results from this." This is the key statement of Miracles, in which C.S. Lewis shows that a Christian must not only accept but rejoice in miracles as a testimony of the unique personal involvement of God in His creation.
