About this listen

A remarkable audio edition of C.S. Lewis' beloved classic - the only existing recording of Lewis reading his own work.

C.S. Lewis - the great British writer, scholar, theologian, broadcaster, Christian apologist, and bestselling author of Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, The Chronicles of Narnia, and many other beloved classics - explores the essence of love and how it works in our daily lives in one of his most famous works of nonfiction based on his series of radio talks from 1958.

With penetrating logic and charming wit, Lewis explores the four aspects of love: affection, the most basic form; friendship, the rarest and perhaps most insightful; Eros, passionate love; and charity, the greatest and least selfish.

Lewis exposes the pitfalls in our loves, leading us to the agape love that God has for humankind and the type of love we must develop to nurture our relationships. Throughout this compassionate and methodical study, he encourages readers to open themselves to all forms of love - the key to understanding that brings us closer to God.

Love Explored

The words for and about love are often interchanged, Lewis defines the differences. He divides them into four categories; affection, friendship, erotic love, and selfless love. Although an individual can experience more than one type at a time, they are still very different. Quick and concise.

Lovely.

Wonderful to hear Lewis' own voice in expounding the natures of love as it is found, and in explaining the meanings behind the Greek words that are translated into "love" in our own New Testament scriptures.

A deeper look on love

Love is mentioned so many times in the Bible, yet there is no clear definition in the Bible. Meaning, that love is used in different situations and contexts but the word does not change. This audible goes into depth about love and profoundly changes the view on what is love. I highly encourage any Christ follower to not only read the edited book but also this audible. For a religion that uses the word love so often, it is important to understand what the Bible means when it uses love and how it applies to us.

Please note, this is not the book but an edited audio of CS Lewis giving a lecture on the four loves. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the original authors musings and words. As it gave me a deeper insight into him and his works. For those of you trying to dive into CS Lewis’s works I would not recommend this as it is an unedited version of his book the Four Loves. But for those of you that have read some of his works, I would recommend this audible.

A Lot to Digest

Lewis is a brilliant man who has a deep and broad intellect. This is a lot to digest, to get the full value to what he has to say. I had a little difficulty getting the study guide which I have not used yet as I wanted to listen to it all the way through first. He reinforces, to me, that all of this is God given and only God honored in the context of a Christian world view. Lewis reaffirms to me that God is our all in all. In all the four loves, the agape is the key to rightfully divide the others. Anything else is fallen short of His design. It was a treat to hear him do the narration. He strikes me as the kind of teacher you couldn't get anything over on.

Loved it

Absolutely delightful to hear C.S. Lewis read this book. And of course, his writing is always incredible. He understood the human condition ans our need for our Savior and expressed the subject matter in words in such a profound way. I love his writing particularly because it is shallow enough for a lamb to go wading but deep enough for an elephant to swim.

Hearing C. S. Lewis

Like sitting in a university couse with C. S. Lewis as the professor! This 1958 recording is a unique opportunity. He is clear in his British accent. I will listen again just for the experience. His teaching on the four loves defines the Greek better than anyone I've heard.

Things I never understood, So plainly put

I love CS Lewis. Anything by him is excellent. But to be able to listen to his actual voice! Wow. And his inflection as he reads his own work, adds to my understanding.
