Slow going, but good
Reviewed: 01-07-20
I didnt like this one as much as Barsk the Elephants Graveyard. it took 10 chapters for anything to really happen and the metaphysical breakdowns made my head hurt. I liked it overall, but pace was too slow for my taste

Story
It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

the reader really sells this story
Reviewed: 11-21-19
I've never read Nora Robert's before and after listening to this I can see why she is a NYT bestseller. it was not what I was expecting. supernatural post apocalyptic that goes into horror a key points. the reader does an exceptional job with all the characters, even the male ones. I will certainly listen to the rest of this series, ut I need a break from the dark

Story
Adventuring is a costly affair, and while the tolls are often paid in blood, gold can drain away just as quickly. The party's trek out of Solium and across the lands of Alcatham has left them with only a handful of gold between them. Fortunately, they have drawn near Camnarael, Alcatham's capital, where all manner of quests - and rewards - await. But all is not as expected in the capital.

really good, with a few language issues
Reviewed: 08-06-19
this is a really great series if you ever played tabletop games. This one lacked some of the humor I really enjoyed from book one and there were a few unnecessary crude language that I could have done without. Can't wait to read book 3

Story
What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry.

what happens when the planned quest takes a hard left? THIS BOOK WAS FANTASTIC and for anybody who has played tabletop or game mastered one you must read this book. The pain that comes when alleged heroic characters become mass murderers just because they can is clear on the gm character in the book and the warriors bond formed between the npcs turned adventurers is well written with several perspective jokes and gags from the POV of the main characters. if you've ever been involved in tabletop for any significant length of time you will enjoy this book

Story
In a distant future, no remnants of human beings remain, but their successors thrive throughout the galaxy. These are the offspring of humanity's genius-animals uplifted into walking, talking, sentient beings. The Fant are one such species: anthropomorphic elephants ostracized by other races and long ago exiled to the rainy ghetto world of Barsk. There, they develop medicines upon which all species now depend.

edgy zootopia in space
Reviewed: 04-12-19
If you were to take the idea of zootopia, gave it and edge and put it in space you'd get this book. a very entertaining story about humanoid animals dealing with the machinations of politics, death and memory. the climax gets a little weird but is really a great point in the book. Plus how can you not enjoy something read by a guy who played a Klingon at one time.
