About this listen

What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry. Once the dust settles, these four find themselves faced with an impossible choice: pretend to be adventurers undertaking a task of near-certain death or see their town and loved ones destroyed. Armed only with salvaged equipment, second-hand knowledge, and a secret that could get them killed, it will take all manner of miracles if they hope to pull off their charade. And even if they succeed, the deadliest part of their journey may well be what awaits them at its end.

Extremely fun listen

As a fan of table top games, I found this book an enjoyable listen. The characters are well developed, and break some of the typical fantasy tropes. The narration is solid; not the best ever, but above average. If you want a fun listen, it's worth a credit.

its an ok listen

Any additional comments?

pretty good but not great; a solid four stars overall. Does raise some questions for the Deep of mind, but that is about it. the characters are not believable but ARE fun.

Fun story, good characters , way to short.

This book was a lot of fun, the story was very engaging. The character dialogue was relatable, and the concept is unique and fun. My biggest issue is this feels like only 1/3 of a book, where's the rest?

Would've Never Guessed How Fun...

Too many years ago I enjoyed playing D&D, and this book has a great twist that took me back to those fun times. Definitely worth listening to, you wont be sorry.

Very nice

I especially liked this unusual view on traditional adventuring setup. Highly recommended to Robert Asprin fans) can't wait for Drew Hayes' next book

A really nice suprise

I got this book on sale so I didn't expect much, but I found it one of the best I've read in awhile. If you want a serious fantasy then this isn't for you. But if you want something with a new story, that's irreverent and funny, and has some of the most interesting characters I've come across in awhile then this book is for you.

Entertaining

A fun read w/ some fun twists... The idea's a simple one and its execution was done nicely... I love the idea of the story coming alive in such a literal way;). The mingling of the real world w/ that of the gamed one was done creatively and humorously... All who've gamed has known schmucks like the Corporeal adventurers, and their depiction was spot on... Definitely a read that will appeal to those gamers current or retired;). Likely not as much to those who have never gamed, but if you keep an open mind through a bit of a slow start you'll find yourself engaged/invested in the quest and questers... There's a bit of overcoming stereotypes and perceived predestination underlying the outward adventure and might be the actual takeaway from the story... Some good characters, if a little vanilla at times... The narration works well w/ the story and characters... The overall product exceeds any of it's components and it's an easy read, not to mention a humorous rollick... Got it on sale and I wasn't disappointed...

So Fun!

This was just a joy to listen to. While it was simple in both plot and characters it did not take away the charm of the book. A quick and easy read, like a sweet piece of candy. If you love table top gaming and rpgs this is a cant miss.
I cant wait to read more of the series.

Not a new genre, but a fresh take

Fun take on the fantasy genre that's just a little subversive. Good writing makes it fun, rather than tropey. Looking forward to watching this author mature!
