Story
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

I was hesitant to join Mr. King on this journey. I didn't understand or know if I wanted to take his hand. I took it with guarded distrust nonetheless I'm better for it. I didn't agree with or believe all I experienced however he solidified why I think he's still one of the great American storytellers. Don't be afraid! Take his hand, if you dare 😏

Story
For four aging men in the terror-stricken town of Milburn, New York, an act inadvertently carried out in their youth has come back to haunt them. Now they are about to learn what happens to those who believe they can bury the past - and get away with murder. Peter Straub's classic best seller is a work of "superb horror" ( Washington Post Book World) that, like any good ghost story, stands the test of time - and conjures our darkest fears and nightmares.

I could not put it down. It reminded me of the Black House. There were so many twists and turns! My emotions were all over the place.
The characters were multi-layered, realistic, and engaging.
The narrator was adept at drawing the listener into the story.
I'd suggest this story to begin your obsession with Peter Straub.

Jack is unbearable...
Reviewed: 09-10-20
I enjoy listening to these books however I find the subtle messages annoying. I think Jack is overly needy and insecure. He doesn't allow Ivy to breathe enough. Anytime she tries to assert her independence, he becomes controlling, obsessive, and upset. Ivy is a talented, passionate, and curious woman who has the gift of helping others while solving murders. I think that she'd be a great P.I. Jack has a very unhealthy personality. Anytime anyone teases, looks, or comments about Ivy he reacts angrily and wants to lash out. I'm not saying doesn't have a sweet side nonetheless it's at the cost of controlling his partner. I'd hate to see how he reacts to sharing Ivy with their kids. I like the creativity of the plots. I do think the author is redundant in some areas of each book. I think a recap should only occur once and not throughout the book again. The narrator does a good job with the material she has been given. If you enjoy magical mysterious monogamy then this series is a great escape!

A Fun Escape
Reviewed: 09-01-20
I enjoy this series. The stories are fun, engaging, and intriguing. I like the supernatural element. I also like that the whole family is involved in solving the mysteries.
I like how Ivy Morgan is written as a fun, passionate, and independent woman develops her inherent powers.
Also, I like how the characters play of each other.
My only complaint is how the writer infantilizes Ivy. Any time something dangerous happens Jack and her family members treat her like a child then become overprotective. I understand they are usually just worried for her safety. However, Jack takes it to a level of being obsessive. He often laments that if anything happens to her he couldn't live. He has an almost compulsive obsession with keeping Ivy safe like Golum. He doesn't like anyone teasing her or the fact that she dating anyone before him. It's quite unhealthy.
If you can get past that part of the story you'll find this an interesting read.

Story
Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis. In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low-grade - but escalating - battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice.

Well written!
Reviewed: 11-14-19
Stephen King is an excellent writer but not very good at narrating. Several times I lost interest in the story because his voice can sound monotone. However when he read "Lori", there was a marked difference. I could hear the emotion in his voice and his love of story telling. Overall, I'd suggest these stories to anyone who enjoys an "unusual feel good" story.
