Story
Anne Lister was extraordinary. Fearless, charismatic, and determined to explore her lesbian sexuality, she forged her own path in a society that had no language to define her. She was a landowner, an industrialist, and a prolific diarist whose output has secured her legacy as one of the most fascinating figures of the 19th century. Gentleman Jack: The Real Anne Lister follows Anne from her crumbling ancestral home in Yorkshire to the glittering courts of Denmark as she resolves to put past heartbreak behind her and find herself a wife.

Worthwhile listen if you have any interest in Anne Lister’s life and loves. This book focus primarily on the period covered in the wonderful BBC HBO series “Gentleman Jack.” It includes excerpts from Anne’s coded diaries and moves along the same chronological path the series does. Hopefully there will be more written about this fascinating woman but I’m so appreciative that we’re beginning to discover more about her particular brilliance and more generally learn what life was like for women who loved women during that era.

Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Hard to believe this is non-fiction. However, in an era when a con man grifter sits atop a pile of lies in the White House, I suppose it’s not that far fetched to see a fabulist grifter fool Silicon Valley venture capitalists (and nearly everyone else) for so long.
Incredible research and excellent narration. Great journalism of our time at work....

Really?

While I enjoyed the other two novels in this series, I must say this third book is a dud. First of all, if one is going to right about lesbian women and their sexual habits perhaps one should talk to a few in order to better understand how to write about them. The author’s imagination takes him to great heights but I was laughing the entire time. His heterosexual sex scenes in the first two books were fast forward worthy, but I laughed aloud this go ‘round. It was annoying....
Frankly, it’s do bad I didn’t bother to finish. Per usual the narration was good, but Matthew’s needs a lesson or two as to how women interact and how to create characterizations that aren’t implicitly misogynist. Sure, it’s fine to have women be villains and/or unattractive, but if you plan to write about them try to be a tad more aware.

Orphaned, Cameron comes to live with her old-fashioned grandmother and ultraconservative aunt Ruth. When she’s eventually outed, her aunt sends her to God’s Promise, a religious conversion camp that is supposed to “cure” her homosexuality. At the camp, Cameron comes face to face with the cost of denying her true identity.

Reviewed: 02-27-16
Would you consider the audio edition of Fingersmith to be better than the print version?
I find that listening to a novel like this is a much richer experience when, as it true in this case, the narrator can bring individual characters to life. Ms. McMahon does this in stellar fashion.
What other book might you compare Fingersmith to and why?
Well, of course, Sarah Water's other books like Tipping the Velvet and more recently, The Paying Guests.
What about Juanita McMahon’s performance did you like?
Everything...her performance caused the words to take full form, bringing the story and its characters to life in ways not possible my simply reading it.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not to give anything away, but when Susan is waiting and watching....
Any additional comments?
I only wish Sarah Waters could write a book a year....

A wonderful novel
Reviewed: 01-15-16
What did you love best about Carol - The Price of Salt?
The richness of Highsmith's writing. The novel unfolds slowly in contrast to the rapidity with which these two very different women fall in love. I particularly appreciate Highsmith's descriptions and insights into what otherwise might be rather mundane objects or experiences.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Carol - The Price of Salt?
Waterloo...
Which scene was your favorite?
It's hard to choose just one...there are so many moments in this novel that I appreciated. I have listened multiple times and with each I discover something new.
Who was the most memorable character of Carol - The Price of Salt and why?
The book is written from the perspective of Therese (unlike the film) and it's hard not to be drawn to her journey. I appreciate how she transformed through her love of Carol to become a young woman with a mind of her own.
Any additional comments?
The narration was excellent.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. The book is well-written, the characters well-drawn and the narration brings it all to life.
What did you like best about this story?
I appreciate how the three protagonists are developed both in terms of their professional work as investigators and their personal lives. Of course the two threads intersect at times making the narrative flow that much more intriguing.
What about Julia Barrie’s performance did you like?
Oh, where to begin. Listening to her I felt as though I was watching a film, seeing and hearing each of the characters come to life, even the most minor ones. Her narration is remarkable.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Sure, if I had the time. I didn't want it to end.
