About this listen

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist return to the Girl in the Dragon Tattoo series in this ripped-from-the-headlines, high-octane follow-up to Stieg Larsson's The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. • Also known as the Millennium series

“Rest easy, Lisbeth Salander fans—our punk hacker heroine is in good hands.… A twisty, bloody thrill ride.… An instant page-turner.” —
USA Today

The next installment in the Millennium series: a genius hacker who has always been an outsider; a journalist with a penchant for danger. She is Lisbeth Salander, the girl with the dragon tattoo. He is Mikael Blomkvist, crusading editor of Millennium. One night, Blomkvist receives a call from a source who claims to have been given information vital to the United States by a young female hacker. Blomkvist, always on the lookout for a story, reaches out to Salander for help. She, as usual, has plans of her own. Together they are drawn into a ruthless underworld of spies, cybercriminals, and government operatives—some willing to kill to protect their secrets.

Oh Bravo, David Lanercrantz AND Simon Vance!

Would you listen to The Girl in the Spider's Web again? Why?

Again and again and again. Author picked up just the right strings from the previous trilogy.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

A few twists and turns.

Which scene was your favorite?

The ending is what I had hoped for.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Simon Vance is the perfect person to narrate this book. As a fan of the first three audio books, his emotions came right through beautifully.

Any additional comments?

When can we expect book 5??????

Good Story

I read this in one day. I liked the story and Simon is awesome. Just had a problem with a couple of things the writer changed. I didn't like him taking some of the important back ground info and changing it to fit the story. I felt he should have left them alone. Don't want to give anything away but I am annoyed with that.

Wonderful follow up to the original!!!

The central characters have been brought back to life brilliantly. I fervently hope the series will continue.

3 ½ stars.

Not as good as the previous books written by Larsson, but I like reading about Lis.

Lis is not active in the story until almost halfway through. The best thing about Larsson’s writing was that he shocked, surprised, and delighted me with things Lis would do. Even something small like the night guard asked her to tell him when she left the building. She did not tell him because she didn’t feel like walking out the door he was at. She didn’t know he was spying for a bad guy. As a result she got the upper hand on something because she was not a polite person - like I would have been. Larsson had many unexpected things in his books. This author did not. It was more about Lis being a tough guy and doing tough guy things that are common in other books. It was ok but not special.

I was annoyed with the author Lagercrantz for using artificial cliffhangers in the middle of scenes. Many authors do this as a way to create “extra suspense.” I don’t like it. The Day of the Jackal is a great suspense novel which does not do that or need that. Here’s an example of what Lagercrantz did in this book. Blomkvist visits Palmgren to ask questions about Lis’ past. They have a 15 minute conversation. The author interrupted that conversation twice to switch to another scene with other characters elsewhere. Those interruptions served no purpose other than to make the reader wonder what the next sentence would be.

What I liked? The 8-year-old autistic boy August and his relationship with Lis. He’d never spoken before but with her it just comes out. He’d never spelled before, but with her he did. Something within them connected.

There was one torture scene talked about but no details shown. There was an evening of sex referred to with no details.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
Simon Vance was excellent. He does women well.

Narrative mode: 3rd person.
Genre: suspense thriller.

Good continuation of the Millennium series...but WHY is the narrator pronouncing the names differently?

Good continuation of the Millennium series...I was worried it would be a different style than Larsson, but it flowed well & had the same “feel” as the trilogy. I have a 45 minute commute so have been listening to quite a few books. I listened to the Millennium books back-to-back. I was excited that Simon Vance continued narrating when the author changed, but was lost at first with his mis-pronunciations of character names. And central names like Berger & Salandar. Not sure why he changed, but I found it took away from the overall performance.

Worthy successor.

Having enjoyed the previous Salander books immensely I was afraid this wouldn't live up to their standard. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed this one equally. I hope he writes more.

READ THIS! Doesn't Live Up...

NO SPOILERS. I really liked the writing of the original trilogy. In my opinion, this author was already set up for failure trying to meet or exceed such a high standard of the original author. I liked the overall plot, but you can tell that even though the characters have the same names, they are slightly different, which should be expected with a new author. In this continuation, Blomkvist feels old and useless and is rather boring, unlike in his previous adventures. I didn't like that. And additional side characters in the book had too much knowledge, facts and insight to feel very realistic. It was as if the author needed to insert PHD level scientific and technological facts and used common blue collar characters to possess this knowledge. Lisbeth's character just didn't act like I expected her to either. She felt very laid back compared to her last appearance. That was a let down. I'm not saying the book wasn't decent, but my expectations were not met. The narration was good but I was very annoyed at the pronunciation of 'Salander' with the emphasis on the 'L' instead of the 'S', as I seem to remember from the previous audio books. I listened comfortably at 1.25X speed. I obviously would use a credit if you like these characters, just don't get your expectations too high. It's not often you get second chances!

I loved this book and the differences in writing were so minimal that I'd never have guessed it was written by another author. I'm so thankful that this series is able to continue. This book was worthy of the Lisbeth Salander series and I'm looking forward to whatever comes next.
