I'm halfway through book 3 and loving it.
Excellent narration, good plot once it gets going.
I like the magic system and the worldbuilding.
It's brain candy, but good quality brain candy. I hope there will be more.

Story
In the bustling streets of New York, a killer is on the loose, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. But this isn't just any ordinary murderer—they're using an explosive rune, a powerful magic that should only exist in the pages of Alex Lockerby's own lore book. As the city descends into chaos and fear, Alex finds himself in a race against time to catch the culprit before they strike again. With his own abilities temporarily gone, he must rely on his wit and determination to solve the case.

about Alex's drinking. I suppose it's just the hard-boiled detective trope, but still.
So many fictional detectives fail to make obvious (to the reader, at least) connections, and Alex is no exception to the rule, but the stories are solid and the narration is perfect.

I picked this series based on the narrator, and Travis Baldree did not disappoint. The writing is engaging, the story well crafted, and the pacing good.
The guest appearance by (the character voice of) The Malific Viper made me smile.

Story
Even better, no one suspects she is human. Masquerading as a goblin Traveler, she roams Reality in her glittering van pulled by her two trusty world walking birds, Warp and Weft. But when a storm of cosmic chaos strands her in an outer thread, the only refuge in sight is the legendary Darkhouse of Doom. Goblin legend says it is cursed; that the appearance of the wandering darkhouse foretells the appearance of world-devouring monsters and the death of all who see it.

Story
Jack Diller is just one more struggling actor on the road to nowhere. He’s got an agent who barely remembers his name, his ex-girlfriend has hooked up with a Silicon Valley dude, and the milk in his fridge is so far past its sell-by date it’s historic. The only way Jack can scrape together a bare existence is by delivering food to exactly the types of successful people he wishes he could be. Then, one day, a very strange audiobook shows up on his phone.

Story
All Damali Richards ever wanted to do was create music and bring it to the people. Now she is a Spoken Word artist and the top act for Warriors of Light Records. But come nightfall, she hunts vampires and demons - predators that people tend to dismiss as myth or fantasy. But Damali and her Guardian team cannot afford such delusions, especially now, when a group of rogue vampires have been killing the artists of Warriors of Light and their rival, Blood Music.

I remember this book from when it was new, something made me think of it this weekend so I spent a credit.
Wow.
I don’t know who cast this but that individual needs to seek therapy and new employment. She is the flattest, whitest, voice I’ve ever heard - and I’m from Iowa, her attempts at AAVE are beyond comprehension.

Disturbing story, odd narration.
Reviewed: 07-24-21
This is a great, if deeply disturbing, book. The history itself is dark. The story as Grann tells it is well-written and an excellent telling of the tale. The history of the FBI before the 1950’s is welcome.
The narration, however. Le Sigh.
I don’t know why we needed three narrators, I really don’t. I think this audiobook would have been 100% better if Ann Marie Lee had read it all. Will Patton is “acting” too much for a non-fiction work, and Danny Campbell is just ... unnecessary.
Sorry guys.

Story
In an alternate 1880s London, angels inhabit every public building, and vampires and werewolves walk the streets with human beings in a well-regulated truce. A fantastic utopia, except for a few things: Angels can Fall, and that Fall is like a nuclear bomb in both the physical and metaphysical worlds. And human beings remain human, with all their kindness and greed and passions and murderous intent. Jack the Ripper stalks the streets of this London too. But this London has an Angel. The Angel of the Crows.
