Will Guidara was twenty-six when he took the helm of Eleven Madison Park, a struggling two-star brasserie that had never quite lived up to its majestic room. Eleven years later, EMP was named the best restaurant in the world. How did Guidara pull off this unprecedented transformation? Radical reinvention, a true partnership between the kitchen and the dining room—and memorable, over-the-top, bespoke hospitality.

Story
By early 1943, it had become increasingly clear the Allies would win the Second World War. Christian intellectuals on both sides of the Atlantic thought the soon-to-be-victorious nations were not culturally or morally prepared for their success. These Christian intellectuals - Jacques Maritain, T. S. Eliot, C. S. Lewis, W. H. Auden, and Simone Weil, among others - sought both to articulate a sober and reflective critique of their own culture and to outline a plan for the moral and spiritual regeneration of their countries in the post-war world.

The Case Against Education
- Why the Education System Is a Waste of Time and Money

Story
Despite being immensely popular - and immensely lucrative - education is grossly overrated. In this explosive book, Bryan Caplan argues that the primary function of education is not to enhance students' skill but to certify their intelligence, work ethic, and conformity - in other words, to signal the qualities of a good employee.

A Compelling Case to Change How We Think About the Topic
Reviewed: 02-20-19
Dr. Caplan makes a compelling argument for why (at least socially) we need to reconsider our educational priorities. I appreciated his combining of rigorous data analysis with observations from laymen that we can all relate to. Finally, his care in answering good faith objections to his arguments were an important inclusion. I hope more people will read this book and come away with at least a slightly different view than when they started it.

Bloom’s critique of the University provides an excellent backdrop to understanding our current mess. Unless modern reformers are willing to explore the roots of what’s troubling today’s colleges, they cannot begin to move things in a better direction.

Story
Only once in the last 250,000 years have humans stumbled upon a way to lift ourselves out of the endless cycle of poverty, hunger, and war that defines most of history. If democracy, individualism, and the free market were humankind’s destiny, they should have appeared and taken hold a bit earlier in the evolutionary record. The emergence of freedom and prosperity was nothing short of a miracle.

This book should be the starting point for anyone genuinely interested in hearing the fundamental beliefs and assumptions of modern American conservatives (and many libertarians as well).
Jonah makes his arguments clearly (and I believe convincingly). Open minded readers of any intellectual or political stripe will find great value here.

The Righteous Mind

Story
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

An excellent book that can help us all understand each other better, even if that doesn’t lead to agreement.
Backed up with convincing research, Haidt makes a persuasive argument and offers some solutions that can, at the very least, help keep us from talking past one another. Well worth the read.
