Deadwood, late 1876. A rowdy and reckless undertaker’s delight. What better place for a killer to blend in? Enter undertaker Clementine Johanssen, tall and deadly with a hot temper and short fuse, hired to clean up Deadwood’s dead...and the “other” problem. Great Start
Reviewed: 01-19-25
The Deadwood Mystery Series is my favorite book series and I've read all the spin offs, so of course I was going to pick this up as soon as Harvey started wondering about a female undertaker in the old west. And now the Deadwood Undertaker Series has become my husband's favorite!
I absolutely love all the world building and as someone who loves old Western movies I grately enjoyed the descriptions of the smells because let's be honest, it would have been intense and we never think about it. I also love that we jump right into the "other" world in this spin off and there isn't any ambiguity as to what Clem is (I guess unless this is your introduction to the world.)
Even the narrator did a good job once I was used to his female voice. Honestly, the worst part was how slow we spoke, thankfully we have a speed adjustment to help that.
Definitely can't wait for the next book in the series.

Story
Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen's reservoirs for as long as she can remember. But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone. When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares… but it turns out they're real.

This Is How Audio Books Should Be Done

Honestly, the story was only a 4.5, but this audiobook version with its excellent narration, boosted it straight to a 5 star read! Hands down one of my favorite books of 2024.

Only thing that could have made it better was dual narration
Reviewed: 10-30-24
When I first started listening I was apprehensive because the narrator does not do well with multiple voices. And maybe it's because I've read this series so many times that I already knew what was going on, but by the end I felt like she had done a great job. However, dual narrators would have made it better.

Story
Riot Night changed my life. Coming back to Shadow Grove turned it on its head. I’ve been hunted, stabbed, stalked, tormented, and used. Hate fueled me, lies tore me apart, and in the end, everything I thought I knew turned out to be fake. Except...Riot Night also brought Archer, Kody, and Steele back into my life. No matter how much I’ve fought it, hated it, been lied to, or discovered the deceptions - I want them in my life.

sound effects
Reviewed: 10-06-24
I listen to a lot of audiobooks. I love that this series uses dual narration in the way that they do because it's perfect. But why in the heck did they decide to add sound effects? This is an audiobook, not a radio show, every time it happened it took me completely out of the story. Huge thumbs down for that part, otherwise great book

Cricket Kendall's birthday is a little more than a month away. She's just moved to Emery Ridge, Colorado, for her senior year of high school in the hopes her eccentric aunt, Aurora, might help her learn all she needs to know about becoming a full-fledged witch. Just a few days after moving to her new town, Aurora introduces Cricket to a young werewolf from the local pack. Theo Ashbrooke is funny, charming, and super-freaking-hot. Cricket and Theo connect right away, and it doesn't take long before they're spending almost all of their time together.

Staying for the world

Full Series Review:
This world is great, these characters and their diversity are interesting...
The writing itself is so very very bad. I kind of feel bad giving this subbar narrator bad marks for this book because she did the best she could with what she had. But I kind of feel like she just made a bad book worse...
If you can handle constant repetition, misspellings and mispronunciations, characters with names that are so similar but it's hard to tell who's talking ,weak and poor sentence structure, twisted and convoluted cycling plot points, and a harem of men read by a narrator that only has two voices... then by all means give the series a go because it is unique...
Otherwise, save yourself the headache and skip this one.

For 18 years I've suffered at the hands of the Hunters. They've done their best to break me, to tear me open and unleash the terrifying monster that lives within. Until the day they go too far. When a desperate escape leads to another brush with death, I'm forced to place my trust in the hands of four formidable strangers. Wild and untamed, their feral natures call to me, their warrior hearts make mine come alive. And when they offer me a place to stay while I heal, I can't say no. Soooo Slow
Reviewed: 05-19-24
This book was way too long for nothing to happen. The author could have cut 300 pages (half the book) of exact same internal dialogues printed over and over and over again and would have had a much better book. I might check out the second one, but it won't be until way after the third one is released.
Beyond the book itself being so agonizingly slow and boring, the narrators spoke so slowly that it was only bearable at 1.55 or faster speed. Also, at one point the female audio narrator forgets that Jason is British and gives him a Southern accent. That part made me LOL.

There are a few things here that I definitely disliked which brought an actual good story down to just Eh, from me. but they would contain spoilers. let's just say one of my least favorite trope/plot device happens. There was a lot of repetition from Every POV, It was strangely preachy. And the narrator turned the strong rescue diver into a whiney child during spicy times.... So yeah...
