Story
The Bobiverse is a different place in the aftermath of the Starfleet War, and the days of the Bobs gathering in one big happy moot are far behind. There’s anti-Bob sentiment on multiple planets, the Skippies playing with an AI time bomb, and multiple Bobs just wanting to get away from it all. But it all pales compared to what Icarus and Daedalus discover on their 26,000-year journey to the center of the galaxy.

Was pleased
Reviewed: 10-11-24
I was worried about the series after book 4, it was not bad, however not to the great storytelling that had been previous.
This book, however, was everything I have enjoyed. If you are hesitant, don’t be. It is as good as any other. I do recommend, although I’ll always miss Homer.

Story
War heroes aren't usually called out of semi-retirement and sent to the far reaches of the galaxy for a routine investigation. So when Colonel Carl Butler answers the call from an old and powerful friend, he knows it's something big - and he's not being told the whole story. A high councilor's son has gone MIA out of Cappa Base, the space station orbiting a battle-ravaged planet. The young lieutenant had been wounded and evacuated - but there's no record of him having ever arrived at hospital command.

In a transformed mid-19th-century America dominated by plantation owners and kept in line by Southern military forces, a mild-mannered academic from Maine, Professor Joshua Chamberlain, stands accused of crimes against the nation. In court alongside him is Abraham Lincoln, whose fiery rhetoric brands him a "threat to the security of the United States of America". Convicted, Chamberlain is sentenced to 40 years hard labor, while Lincoln's fate is indefinite detention at Fortress Monroe.

Well written, except for Lincoln
Reviewed: 05-07-22
Given Lincoln’s actions, during which he set up exactly the sort of government this story assumes happened a generation before, it is inconceivable that he would have sided and been a hero of the freedom fighter. His only goal & principal was the preservation of the Union.
He Cared not for the Constitution, he jailed Senators and Court Justices. His portrait in this so out of character it makes the whole story ring false. Which is a shame, considering how well it is written.

Great Stories and Narration - Not Properly Sectioned
- By Greg on 01-01-21
Few Lasers. Few epic space battles. Many complete yarns which explore human nature.
Reviewed: 10-04-18
Fools who are often extremely poorly read & ignorant of history often dismiss science fiction, however in the 20th century has almost no Literary work which at the time it was written was not science fiction. Many of these tales if read today might be viewed as alternate history.
I think however they should remain viewed and categorized as science fiction simply because this genre is the one in modern times that challenges not only the idea of mountains place in the universe but our philosophies are relationships with one another the constant of war, of poverty, Of duplicity, murder, rape, no other genre shows the smallness in the greatness of an individual.
