Story
Evan Smoak is a highly trained former government assassin who has survived for years by keeping his circle to a few trusted confidants and a strict code he calls “The Ten Commandments.” But when Evan suddenly finds himself at odds with his oldest friend, all the rules he lives by shatter—and the consequences are murderous. Tommy Stojack might be Evan's best friend in the world. He’s a gifted gunsmith who has created much of Evan's own weapons and combat gear. But now, he has apparently crossed one of Evan's hardest lines and their argument explodes into open warfare.

Spoilers…sort of.
When a book hits you so hard in the feels that you carry it around in your heart like a stone for the rest of the day you know it’s been powerful. Thank you for this top-notch addition to the orphan X series. I loved it but I’m going to need some time to recover. If you need me I’ll be in the corner with some tissues.

Great story and further development of an interesting character
Reviewed: 09-08-23
I predict that this book will not rate as many stars simply because Covid features prominently and people are weary of Covid and because King's views on the vaccine are frequently referenced by characters in the book and people against the vaccine are not portrayed in a positive light. This will make anti-vaxxers pissed off. Pro-Trumpers will also get rubbed wrong.
It's, I feel, a good solid book. I enjoyed it. It's not my most favorite King book but it's also not my least favorite. I noticed just the book is in that very small number of King books that doesn't feature any supernatural component. Since I must save five stars for the top of the heap, I will give this one four. I thought the narrator was great. And appropriate. Patton is an excellent narrator, but would be completely wrong for a book told from Holly's perspective.
If you're reading this, Mr. King, thank you again for the hours of entertainment! I look forward to your next one!

There are three rules Brooke Sullivan must follow as a new nurse practitioner at a men’s maximum-security prison: 1) Treat all prisoners with respect. 2) Never reveal any personal information. 3) Never EVER become too friendly with the inmates. But none of the staff at the prison knows Brooke has already broken the rules. Nobody knows about her intimate connection to Shane Nelson, one of the penitentiary’s most notorious and dangerous inmates.

So the story was pretty decent until it kind of went off the rails. If you just really don't have anything you know is better to read, it's decent.

Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

I have enjoyed the Joe Pickett series so much. But I almost feel like now CJ box is feeling the pressure to put out a sequel on certain intervals and maybe he's having to force the story because this latest was barely able to squeak by for me without eye rolls. Of course I will read the next one and I'm glad I read this one but I'm really hoping that the next one is more in the vein of what I'm used to from a Joe Pickett sequel

A slow, satisfying simmer
Reviewed: 12-29-22
The story has just the right pace. I never found my mind wandering and except for a couple of intense scenes, there was no explosive action. The characters were mostly well fleshed out, humanly flawed, yet redeemable. The twists and turns did totally take me by surprise. I really enjoyed it! Definitely worth the credit.

The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

Not bad, but…
Reviewed: 12-06-22
This book had received so many recommendations and reviews that I decided to give it a try. It left me lacking. It wasn’t a bad book but more seemed like an unfinished book and the “shadowy figures“ we’re just never made really scary enough. It’s like the author chose to, tell you very little on purpose. Sometimes that works, but in this case it didn’t. It seemed like maybe a novice author that was very talented, making their first attempt at publishing but still very rough around the edges. I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t worth all the hype.
