Story
What does divorcing Hollywood’s most powerful jerk get you? In my case, blacklisted and a ticket to rock bottom. A one-time studio executive, I’m now scrabbling as a newly licensed P.I. in the city that popularized noir. And I’ve just landed a job at a shabby downtown agency. Watch out, LA! But that was before I discovered the agency’s specialty—hunting monsters. The actual kind. Suddenly, I’m learning about a side of the city that makes horror seem like a documentary: vampires, werewolves, hostile spirits, and all manner of magic.

Read it twice!
Reviewed: 12-05-24
I read this book when it came out and was very happy that I did so. I wrote a glowing review about that.
But when it came out on Audible, I decided to listen to it! ... That was a really GOOD idea.
Listening allowed me to get deeper into the story with the emotions and nuances that the reader brought to the story!
Also, the second read allowed me to pickup several important story points that are obviously placed there to suggest the kind of direction and future plot developments that the author might be planning in the coming story arc for the series!
The protagonist (Maddy Deeds) learns something in this first book that is instrumental in resolving this part of the story. But having been through it twice, I can't wait for the next book to see where Brad takes her from there!
And, if you are familiar with the Prof Croft series, you won't be disappointed!
Extremely good story! Read it twice!

Story
Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

Disappointed
Reviewed: 06-26-23
I am suddenly wondering whether I loved this series solely due to the storytelling skills of the other artists who read them. I was unhappy with this storyteller and the story.
I was also kicking myself for agreeing to pay the outrageous cost for such a short piece of work.
It cost FAR too much. It was read poorly.
On the plus side, It has alerted me to reevaluate how much I really liked Jim Butcher's other Dresden Files books.
Perhaps I would be happier with an excellent storyteller reading the dictionary?
*****
UPDATE
I went back and reread several of the author's other books.
I find that I must reconsider my speculation as to whether he can actually write well.
In point of fact, he is capable of writing excellent stories.
He simply did not do that here.
That leads me to the conclusion that he was simply not trying to write well when he penned (or typed I guess) "The Law".
He did price it as if it were a well written book by Jim Butcher.
Logically, I can only surmise that some evil villain has kidnapped Jim Butcher and is holding him incommunicado.
They had someone ghostwrite "The Law" and are currently collecting their ill-gotten gains in his name.
I call on the Dresden Files fandom to crack this case and find a way to release Jim Butcher from his abductors!
We cannot allow this affront to our pocketbooks (oh ... and Jim Butcher of course) to go unpunished!
Let us go now and bring these evil perpetrators to be punished by "The Law"!
When we catch them, we will tie them in a steel folding chair and make them listen to "The Law" until their ears bleed!

I’ve taken on my first-ever apprentice. A mage of my bloodline, Alec is as headstrong as he is powerful, his magic bolstered by a shifty trickster god. If that weren’t enough, I’ve been recruited into an NYPD task force on missing persons. Cases in the city are exploding, a little girl among the most recently disappeared. But just as I uncover a bizarre lead, I’m yanked back to the shadow realm - a darker, more dangerous New York - where a nefarious entity has targeted Alec in order to get to me.

Prof Croft is amazing in Shadow Deep!

My wife has dubbed me "Garage Dweller" again because of the fact that I could not tear myself away from Shadow Deep.
But, there were far too many times that while listening to Prof Croft's adventures during my drive from work to home , I simply could bear to stop the audio book and go into the house. When the suspense subsided enough to turn off the car and go in the house, I would go inside and be met with with "the Garage Dweller stirs!".
The emotional interplay between characters and mind blowing twists of plot kept me seat belted in the car.
I highly recommend Shadow Deep and all of the other Prof Croft books!

Where to turn when all roads lead to ruin? Last night I barely escaped 1776 New York City - now I have to go back. My teammates are trapped in a time catch. Worse, the demon master Malphas is building a gateway there, one that could trigger a full-blown apocalypse. But returning will require new allies: A crabby goblin, a fae princess and former lover, and the demon-vampire Arnaud. Yeah, that guy. And we’re no longer facing one time catch, but several. But as hellfire lashes up and day dims to eternal night, I’m facing an even greater test...

Excellent character growth that draws you in and invests you in the story!
Prof Croft and his associates risk themselves and their futures to protect humanity.
He begins to put real trust into his magical connections and moves away from being only a neophyte magic user.
The plot is full of twists and turns and just when you are certain you know what is happening a blade cuts in front of you.
If you have never read a Prof Croft novel, read this one. (But if you are smart, you'll read all the others first!)

To protect Vega and her son from the demon-vampire Arnaud, I’ve secured spots for them in a powerful safe house. The price? Pledging my services to the Upholders - a group searching for stolen loved ones. My new teammates are a young minister, a snarky half-fae, a hulking mermaid, and a druid with major control issues. Bonded by said druid’s magic, I couldn’t wriggle out of this deal if I were coated in wizard’s oil. Now, we’re hunting demons in a past version of New York City that’s on the bad side of strange.

Questionable Leaps of Logic
Reviewed: 08-29-19
The author hopes to reinvent the old Cosmic Consciousness by cloaking it in subtly misstated quantum physics terms.
He hiding is flawed logic inside what sounds like the same scientific terms and theories used by theoretical physicists.
He is building on the guesses of scientists to announce something that he considers certain.
The best that you can say is that he has a THEORY.
I am metaphorically placing it on the "Things To Be Considered" shelf beside all the other theories.
However, I think that I'm going to scoot it over near the Flat Earth and the Fake Moon Landing theories.

It sure would help a lot
Wouldn't you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go
Where all your multi-universe duplicates know your name

The Teslas are all the same
You want to be where everybody knows your name
You want to go where people know
The people aren't quite all the same

And it's a Great way to spend a few hours! But, don't let anyone know that you are reading it.
Or, if they see you listening to it, do your best to stifle most of you chuckles, groans, and belly laughs. I can tell you that sitting there with earbuds shoved in your ears and laughing continuously begins talk of ADHD medications.
So... Don't tell anybody that you are reading this book. The padded cells are all a bland white. (And, there is a funny smell!)
