Excellent Lessons on the Immune System.

This was an excellent way to learn the vocabulary of the immune system. The only thing missing is pictures and diagrams to have a better grasp on the material. I found myself looking up a lot of things on the Internet.

Story
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Story
People unfamiliar with Scripture often assume that women play a small, secondary role in the Bible. But in fact, they were central figures in numerous Biblical tales. It was Queen Esther’s bravery at a vital point in history which saved her entire people. The Bible contains warriors like Jael, judges like Deborah, and prophets like Miriam. The first person to witness Jesus’ resurrection was Mary Magdalene, who promptly became the first Christian evangelist, eager to share the news which would change the world forever.

It's hard to grasp how women lived just by Bible verses alone. Shannon does a great job of bringing context to the story about the times they were living in and makes them seem more alive than just historic.

The narrative was mostly F-bombs. The only thing I learned about depression was the voices and thoughts in a depressed mind is like sleeping with the enemy. Step by step what to do is no help for those who can’t take that first step! F-bombs aside, I think the author meant well.

I guess I was looking for substantiated conservative viewpoints. This book was more about her father, her relationship with her father, and what becoming a mother is like. To me, this was a slam on President Trump (not necessarily his policies) for being cruel to her family and some of the interactions with the cast and crew of The View while pushing through postpartum issues. It did not move my needle, add to my knowledge or change my mind about anything. She was too kind to her cohost, but I will still never watch The View again.

Story
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

Not original story line, but okay.

To me, this was a fictional way to tell the story of the book/movie Hidden Figures to describe what it was like to push through gender and race discrimination during the early years of the space program. The reader did a great job of differentiating characters, but the main female character was made weaker than I'd like in voice and words. Also, the parts involving the intimate relationship between her and her husband were forced and unnecessary. It got off to a good start but waned and leveled off at the middle to just okay for the remainder of the book. It wasn't spellbinding, but it was entertaining.

I tried this lifestyle and it worked even though I'm over 50, in menopause and have a sedentary job. Lost 30 pounds to START my journey. I only gained some back when I disregarded the program mentally. I'm back on the self and coach counseling and haven't gained weight since. What's better is that I feel better, have more energy, and have better attitude daily. I have the control to choose wisely. Just need to choose wisely every day.

Story
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.
